It was. My current coping mechanism for finding a silver lining in the dark clouds, is knowing that if Trump doesn’t get a criminal conviction before the election, then at least it closes out any attempt by the GOP to deny him the nomination.
Which means he’s definitely the one Biden will be facing in November, and that’s better than some alternatives the GOP might parachute in as a replacement. They’re stuck with him, and Biden can beat him. Again.
This Supreme Court is above all concerned about perceptions of its legitimacy, and the gnawing perception that it is legitimizing a Republican Party captured by organized money and the paranoid Religious Right and defined by Citizens United, Dobbs , a stolen Supreme Court seat, Charlottesville and January 6.
That’s why I don’t think this will be a ‘get out of jail’ ruling from the Court.
At the risk of sounding like a Pollyanna, I think the court will move to sharply delineate the scope and extent of presidential immunity within what can reasonably be defined as “presidential acts.”
I don’t think the court’s agreement to take up this question will benefit Trump beyond whatever delay it causes in the other court proceedings.
And despite the baleful popular characterization of the current Supreme Court as a creature of Trump, I believe that in packing the courts Trump was only used by right wing interests more focused on longer-term goals than they were on furthering Trump’s political career or political survival.
I see the organized Right as having determined that it will be increasingly difficult for them in the near future to elect another Republican president, despite whatever advantage they enjoy with the Electoral College, and that their focus for the time being will be on state governments and the ability of the courts and the filibuster to obstruct liberal priorities and agendas.
In that scenario, I don’t see this court laying the groundwork for a Democratic president newly empowered by an expansive version of presidential immunity.
The IVF Ruling Is About Who Gets To Raise Your Children
Lithwick is on to something. It’s a fascinating (in a disgusting way) role reversal for our American Taliban. For decades, they’ve pushed home schooling and not allowing the state to mandate children’s vaccination because the parents should have exclusive control over their children.
Now they’re pushing the opposite with IVF. Of course inconsistency never bothers them. I suspect some of the subconscious psychology behind it is that they are in effect saying there is something wrong, something contrary to “God’s plan,” about a woman who cannot conceive without the assistance of evil science. It’s all about exerting control and punishing people.
I’m voting for buffaloed. I’m running an errand this AM. But while getting ready I had the feeling that we’re being treated like NPC in a scenario written by the thieves guild (otherwise known as the RNC.)
I thought of John Yoo when the Alabama supreme “court” ruled that an embryo is a person. If a person has no vital organs to be damaged, what would be John Yoo’s opinion on torturing that person? So, so many questions.
My silver lining is donnie was told he has to pay full price to Letitia James or lose a lotta property. Full price being $454 million
And should donnie lose the election life will get seriously ugly for him.
If the president has immunity…why does the Constitution allow for impeachment and removal? Did that argument come up when Nixon pulled his shit?
What could be on SCOTUS’s mind that leads them to think this needs argument and ruling? Where do they draw the line? Just at insurrection? How about treason? Murder?
I hate the term “it is what it is” but in this case…it so obviously is what it is.
What part of this whole Trump Immunity issues doesn’t the media talking heads understand? Everyone pivots to a fall back position, of course the Supreme Court will do the right thing. They aren’t trying to slow down the prosecution to give Trump more time. They’ll never grant him immunity for prosecution. All of this is bull. Of course they will. The signs are all over the place and yet talking heads believe it’s business as usual. The Federalist Society’s aim is to deliver a Christian Nationalist monarchy where they never have to face voters and can savage their enemies, gather financial resources from those they do not like, and control every aspect of the lives of the citizens. They have no interest in democracy or the Constitution. This is not politics in play, this is religion in play and the longer that main stream media and talking heads assume the best will prevail, the closer we march to the end of democracy. An Illinois judge declared Trump ineligible as an insurrectionist per the 14th amendment, more states must follow. When the Supreme Court rules otherwise, the states should ignore their ruling citing a corrupted Supreme Court and keep his name off the ballot. The Supreme Court’s power comes form the people. They have no other enforcement means except the compliance of its citizens. When the justices are so corrupted by financial issues America must react. Otherwise a 6-3 vote will end democracy in America.
Believe me, I know the politics within my party at this particular moment in time. I have many faults — misunderstanding politics is not one of them.

It doesn’t matter how horrified and terrified of the Chump takeover these Rs are…they never address it. They resign, they send some weak signals, they quit, they make small noises. But none of them make any waves while they still hold their official position. And none but the fringe never-Chumpers say anything about how he needs to be destroyed or that they will vote for the Ds. None of them trumpet the fact that the Ds have been honorable, committed to the country, aren’t corrupt in any way, and at least deserve the respect of the electorate. No, they quit or don’t run again for office…while saying that D policies will ruin the country and that they will vote for the R candidate.
To me that is the most disheartening thing. They admit defeat to the crazy R takeover. They say govt. is irretrievable broken, they despair, they prophesy destruction, even recant their role in supporting true evil…but they will not tell their constituents that salvation comes from voting D and rejecting this movement. They do nothing to help tilt things back toward sanity. They just quietly pack up and abandon the field, leaving Dems utterly alone in the fight.
Agree… they will dither, do various “back of the napkin” calculations … and 85% of them will ultimately go all in on IVF regulations & laws so monumental and punitive that it becomes effectively unobtainable.
Oh and the 15% of the GOP that does not go “all in” will be paralyzed with fear for their own political survival that they will roll over on every piece of legislation & toe the GOP- MAGA line… knowing that if they don’t - they will be primary-ed out of existence.
A lot of people insisting there will now be no trial. We don’t know that. Just the echo chamber echoing. Like people who say “it’s allll over” followed by “I’m going to move to cannnnada” stop the histrionics. Notice repubs don’t do this shit? We Dems need to buck up and fight.
