While the entire world deals with inflation and high prices, Greg Abbott has decided to intentionally create a logjam on the border, causing commercial traffic to drop by as much as 60%. The next time Republicans pretend to "hate" high prices, maybe ask why they're creating them.

Texas AG Ken Paxton says the quiet part loudly: “The governor has figured out we can stop trade along the border, slow it down, and it will create pressure on Mexico and some of their governors to work out a deal to help us with border security.”

Woohoo
That’s a nice, unexpected little victory. Now let’s get some big ones.
I think I see the problem that Abbott and his brain trust didn’t foresee. It’s call making public announcements of what you are doing. Making them in context or sub-context for winning re-election.
And I’ll say it again if Abbott had done this when we and the world are not coming out of a “Global Fucking Pandemic”…would we be as upset?
Everyone appears to be blaming Abbott right now, but will they still in November in the way that counts - by voting him out of office? I’m skeptical.
Media coverage is also doing good by clearly blaming the responsible party (Abbott), but will it last? Again, I’m skeptical.
Josh has already noted how Axios was trying to portray this as another ‘trucker protest’ rather than an illegal blockcade by Abbott. Quite frankly, the burden will fall on Democrats to remind voters and the media that our problems are largely due to past and continuing sabotage by the Republican party.
She has a shot at unseating Farmer Chuck, whose mental acuity makes Feinstein seem chipper and with it.
I hope the Pod Save America guys do what they did last cycle: research the races where money would have the most impact and then create a fund where your contribution goes equally to each race. If someone you hate is 90 percent certain of winning it’s satisfying but dumb to contribute to his or her opponent. Put that money where it does the most good! I suppose you don’t begin that research until after the primaries, so I’ll be patient.
Political stunts in the US more important than Ukraine? I cannot believe that anyone smart enough to be here at TPM would ever think, much less post, something so st—-d. I’m sure the rest of us here will never forget it
" Though the deals largely seem to be empty rhetoric, they do represent a state governor arrogating federal power — in this case, foreign policy — to himself."
And DOJ should be seeking a court order that they are void ab initio.
Is it possible to put someone on ‘permanent ignore’ here? Please share
Since you asked:
I don’t remember suggesting those outcomes would happen. Seriously, I’m glad that Abbott burned his hand here, and maybe he and others will think twice about this fuckery, but will I wake up tomorrow twenty years younger? I’m skeptical. You can’t just start listing good things that probably won’t happen as a direct outcome of this in an effort to—well, what are you trying to do, in fact?
Oh god, this is an emergency, I’ll do my best, Hola, Mexico! Necesitan comidas! El camino en Antelope Wells es abierto! Muchas gracias!
Has anyone checked Hunter Biden’s lap top for avocados? Just askin.
Officials on both sides are talking about ways to streamline the massive traffic situation at the San Ysidro crossing so that trucks & everyday crossers can have faster lanes separate from rest. Californians applaud Abbott’s efforts to make it easier for us to control all N American Produce.
No wonder I never heard of that place, among the most remote parts of Mexico. The border crossing will need a bit of an upgrade though
Even worse, if Biden takes any action to remove the TX inspectors (send in the national guard??), Abbott gets the chance to stand up as a ‘defender of liberty’ for his supporters. They would love it.
PR is tricky. I think the war has gone so well for Ukraine because they elected a media savvy comedian*.
*That guy is amazingly brave, too!

I wondered what was down in the bootheel of New Mexico. Guess this is it. hahaha
I agree totally. Totally.
I know it’s counterintuitive, but the most pugnacious option is not always the best.
