Under Pressure, Abbott Signs More Deals With Mexican Governors To Ease His Self-Imposed Border Blockade | Talking Points Memo

And the burnishing of his Get Tough foreign policy “credentials”, @mondfledermaus

I’d be really interested to hear from @tena, @txlawyer, and the other Texans here if this is playing well outside “Blue Texas”. I’ve started hearing murmurs of approval up here in the Red Bits of the Midwest.

First of all, it’s not the truckload of rotting avocados that I am concerned about, it is the perception of apathy and/or powerlessness when the fascists are getting ready to pounce. If Republicans succeed in hijacking American Democracy, it will be a world changing event.

Second he is not doing all that much to stop the Russians from doing their thing, other than watching powerless…

I see where you think Abbott cares about the rest of the country.

The odious Sid Miller is vocally opposed, so I don’t think the border slowdown is going especially well for Abbott.

The next border crossing of any capacity west of El Paso is Nogales, a truckload of avocadoes going from Michoacan to Chicago will have to travel 900 extra miles.

Naw! Voters will be excited that by everyone being able to be called by the pronoun of their preference. You don’t know how enthusiastic are Spanish-speakers about the “elle” thing.

"With national pressure bearing down, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ® lurched on Friday towards finding a way to declare victory on his latest border stunt.

Abbott inked deals with the governors of two Mexican states that border Texas. As part of the deals, Abbott agreed to drop a policy he instituted last week which added extra, state-level “safety inspections” to cargo entering the state via the U.S.-Mexico border. "

… … … …

The voters in texas should remeber that Abbott wanted them to starve ans part of his attempt to “own the libs”, create inflation and bedevil Biden with his antics.
This is not what governors do who care about their state and its inhabitants. It’s beyond politics. This man is mentally unstable and ought to be removed from office asap.

I live in blue Texas - Dallas Co is only slightly less blue than Travis Co (Austin.) But as I’ve said, our Ag Commissioner is as red as it gets and he’s mad as hell at Greg and has more or less said so.
The GOP in Texas is all at sixes and sevens. The GOP mayor of McKinney,(a Dallas suburb,) who would not cooperate during the COVID lockdown, yesterday made a statement that he is ashamed of the GOP over book banning.

He has every right to be pissed about Abbott’s antics. He should warn voters to remove Abbott.

And WHY are Democrats so PASSIVE all the time they NEVER call out anything the Republicans or FOX does and this administration is just—oh wait.

The long-term consequence of Abbott’s action:

Opportunity for California and New Mexico Governors to step up to the plate and announce they will support the shipping of goods through their states.

Well he’s not going to do that. He won’t do that any more than we would if Greg was a Democrat.

Sure, if we’re going to violate the Interstate Commerce Clause why the fuck not violate Article I, Sec. 10, Cl. 1? Hell, why stop there? Why not start granting titles of nobility and printing state currency?

I thought the blockage was enema sized?

Something happened. Trucks were moving at one crossing at least. I’m pretty sure Greg’s phone is steaming at this point - he’s heard about this a lot and is in 100% damage repair mode. And he’s going to stay there too, I suspect. This is just the latest and not even the biggest of his fuckups. The Big Freeze was the worst he’s done.

This cannot be said often enough.

But here’s the key thing, I think. Abbott figured if he caused this huge bottleneck and there were shortages and price hikes, people would blame Biden. But by some absolutely unforeseeable random chance people blamed the guy who created the bottleneck and he had to climb down quick. I can’t help thinking there’s a lesson in there for a certain party.

A lesson that party is incapable of learning.

Well there is no way for us to know if the administration has “fought back,” by contacting the Gov and pointing that out to him.
