Speakership Fight Sinks Further As Jordan Opponents Report Threats – TPM – Talking Points Memo

We condemn all threats against our colleagues.

So only threats against our own? Is that the deal? Democrats are still fair game?

And of course any and all “enemies” of Trump, from judges to jurors.

Constitution only says they “shall chuse their Speaker” not what that means. In practice, who is the Speaker, what are their title and/or powers, etc. are determined in the House rules, which can be changed with a majority vote.

If they want to put the ‘Speaker designee’ dunce hat on Jordan, but give all the real power to McBowtie, they absolutely can. Just need a majority vote to change the relevant House rules.

But, like the Speaker vote, House Republicans don’t have enough votes to pass any such plan alone. They’ll need Dem votes, which means some form of power-sharing agreement, which is why you see so many Republicans coming out against the idea in principle. They may act dumb, but their smart enough to see where this is heading if they accede to turning Speaker Pro Tem McBowtie into a princess till he reverts to a pumpkin in January.

Instead, he’s trying to get the caucus to coalesce around a different plan: expand the powers of Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC) to get the House functioning temporarily while he continues campaigning for speaker.

  1. So he can have time to arm twist, brown nose and have his proxies make threatening phone calls.

  2. If the house functions temporarily, people might notice and want to have someone who might actually keep that ball rolling. This might not go well for Gym.

It’s a giant F U to Jim Jordan and the terrorists he pals around with.

McHenry is better off saying, “No thanks!” Many Republicans will hate him for doing this. He ought to say, “That’s flattering, but make me the Speaker, period. And get rid of that privileged motion to vacate. Otherwise, no.”

He already has.

For sure. I think the point is that there will be more.

Hey, Art, it’s Paniq in Long Beach. Long time listener, first time caller. I’d like to dedicate En Vogue to Gym in DC. He has me thinking about this song right now.

“That was literally a name written in secret in case of a 9/11-style effort to decapitate the Capitol,” Waltz told TPM and other reporters Wednesday.

Yes, you f*cking cultist, 9/11 is the recent event most closely associated with an attempt to “decapitate the Capitol”. All those hijacked airliners beating up cops and breaking through Capitol doors…

I don’t like this idea, it rewards gop intransigence and thuggery.

Til January? If the Democrats go for this there better be some serious concessions. No shutdown, aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, NATO, no insurrectionists as committee chairs, serious attention to climate change, and more, oh, and drop their stupid Impeachments of everyone they’re looking at, except maybe start one on C. Thomas and A. Cannon.

Dear Gym,

Gee, must be tough to be unpopular. Jest put yer suit jacket on & head home to lick yer wounds. Think a them who didn’t vote fer you. Now they got MAGA fury to deal with. Nasty messages, phone calls at odd hours and death threats.

No Republican can be trusted. That is all.

It’s a scam. Any Republican is all Republicans. That’s how they operate.

Jordan will work this set of twigs like a real boy.

He may have picked that up at his last job.

The idea that Jordan is now backing McHenry as an acting Speaker just shows how incapable he is of governing… as if not having passed a single bill he sponsored passed in 17 years on the Hill were not enough of an indicator.

I’m guessing this is what the collapse of the Whig Party looked like this.

“I’ve talked to a lot of Republicans individually, many of them who are embarrassed or horrified or disgusted with the way their conference is behaving,” he told us on his way out of the caucus meeting. “But they’re all afraid, afraid to say anything publicly when you see what happens to some of these Republicans who voted against Jordan.”

Profiles in Courage these are not.

And I think that they are reaching out to get on a bipartisan path forward that we’ve been calling for several weeks.”

I like Raskin, but I fail to see how he can really believe this. I see no evidence the GOP are at all interested in finding any bipartisan path forward.

I agree that the speaker needs to be the speaker chosen by the House, not a cosplay one that could not otherwise get the votes. I admit to having been a tiny bit curious about the idea with some dems apparently supporting it in theory, but that passed like a mild bout of indigestion. Any curiosity I had about it disappeared when I saw that Jordan would use the time to whip votes.

Dems need to unite again and say that electing a real speaker is the only thing that will gain their support.
