Speakership Fight Sinks Further As Jordan Opponents Report Threats – TPM – Talking Points Memo

Co-sign. My concern now is that Jordan is trying to shape whatever power McHenry/GOP will retain, i.e. the ability to block a bill that includes Ukraine aid from getting a vote on the floor.

Another face being eaten by a Leopard. This SOB has been tolerating Trump to sic his MAGAts on any one that opposes him, an now that he is getting the same treatment he suddenly becomes a high-roader. Fuck Him!

It’s “unforgivable” but he will keep voting for every ridiculous bill and amendment put forward by the rabid trash pandas in leadership. Otherwise he might be mistaken for a Democrat - the horror!

He’s sorry they’ve bit him in the ass.

Honestly, this is what the GOP has to offer as government? How are they not over and done already?

And the Congressperson receiving threats? This is what they stand for:

I’ll support a Speaker candidate who will fund the WTC Health Fund, Nat’l Flood Insurance and SALT, while keeping the gov’t open + secure border & cut spending.

Wants to increase spending. And cut spending.

From the thread above:

Also, this WSJ detail signals that Republicans are, at least for now, not planning to go to Democrats for support, as Dems have already suggested they’d need a power-sharing agreement in order to save Republicans from themselves … again:

Republicans and Democrats huddled in separate conference meetings on Thursday morning. The lead architect of the plan to give McHenry more powers, Rep. David Joyce (R., Ohio), initially said he hoped to hold a vote as soon as possible but then backed away from that timeline, citing the need to rebut GOP criticism that any vote amounted to a power-sharing arrangement with Democrats.<<

What I was referencing above. I imagine all R’s are going to sign off on making McHenry interim Speaker without making any concessions on votes being brought to the floor. Will McHenry allow the Senate’s forthcoming Super-Aid bill to get a vote?

How do they give McHenry more power without making him actual speaker?

The House is supposed to be governed by a Speaker; it’s in the Constitution. Not a temporary, part time or OK for now guy/gal, someone who, according to House rules, has been elected by a majority of the members.

The GOP is on a fast track to screw this up. Just nominate McHenry and give him the gavel. Jordan does not have the skill set (no legislation passed) or any kind of attribute that will unite the GOP .

Let them fight

Per a source in the room, McCarthy screamed at Matt Gaetz to sit down when he went to the mics, with the source saying Rep. Bost “almost lunging at him.”

What’s the half life of an atomic wedgie? I always thought the look on his face was because he has a perpetual wedgie himself, going back to his wrastlin’ days.

If Josh’s latest EdBlog view is correct, then Jordan would still be the behind the scenes leader calling the shots with a temporary McHenry deal. Just as bad as if he were elected Speaker, basically.

I’m still not clear on how this deal for McHenry can happen without Dems getting some legislation promises or power sharing deals, because it will require Dem votes to pass. Too many R’s hate the idea.

You would be so helpful as to point out where?

All I see is A1S2 “The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker and other Officers” (literally the only place the word “speaker” is used in the text) and A1S5 “Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings”.

It certainly doesn’t sound like Drew Ferguson thought Jordan was uninvolved in the threats and bullying here.

Since we’re talking about threats and violence, here’s some fresh commentary from today on the fountainhead.

They don’t have the votes. I’ve already seen 3 GOPers publicly oppose the idea and more seem to be coming out the woodwork. If it passes, it passes with (probably) a majority of Dem votes.

As it always was going to go, the House will re-open with a handful of Republicans joining with all Democrats in a power-sharing agreement. The only questions will be who is going to be the placebo Speaker (McBowtie?) and what powers Democrats will get out of the agreement.
