I consider him to be a victim, not just a ‘stupid right-wing guy’. He’s a victim of Engineered Ignorance. He trusted the word of his politicians and ‘fox news’ TV pundits and it got him killed. Oh, he was sad in the end. Realized his folly. Too late, unfortunately.

I’ve heard this speech recently spoken by the president of Poland. Almost identical. A bit further on. But the same in spirit. Some rights are better than others and he knows which ones are better while his opposition is a bunch of non-humans that don’t understand. Polish president is no Harvard graduate. He’s a right wing religious zealot who used prejudice against gay people to reelect himself. And it worked. 51% to 49%. In Poland it was a slimy disgusting campaign led by the most awesome political power there - the Catholic Church. So to me, the only question is what is the power that Pompeo is going to lean on here in the US?
The bigger point is, this speak is universal to all authoritarians in every language. How do we recognize it? By feeling our skin crawl when we hear it. It’s dark and totally scary. Every time. And thus it’s not difficult to recognize. It’s rather obvious. So I am surprised you’re not worried. I am.
Pompeo escalates it: “Pompeo highlighted how the commission’s report “emphasizes” that “foremost among these rights are property rights and religious liberty.”” - these two rights are not in the Declaration of Independence. At all. It’s very clear to all that these two rights are not what this country is supposed to stand for. They are after all not that important, an extension of guaranteed rights, an afterthought to be regulated. It’s not only that he’s scaring the s*#t out of us, he’s also rubbing in that we can’t respond to his obvious attempts to twist the Republic around his tiny wants. He’s both scary and disguising. Like all authoritarians.
November is going to be very difficult. They are not going away quietly. And it’s not certain that we are going to win. This is Pompeo declaring that he will stand and fight. And maybe it’s all posturing. But given Portland - I don’t think so.
