Not Raising Debt Ceiling Would Hit The Oldest And Poorest Social Security Recipients First: New Analysis

Its 2 or 3 days that the money gets queued in the account - not a whole month. It seems to be up to the bank to make available before the 1st of the month.

Kev… dear boy…
You sent the House members home. How then can they vote to raise the debt ceiling if they aren’t in DC??

You’re catching on…

It’s like a pocket veto. If it’s never signed, it never takes hold. If there’s no vote, no one is to blame.

This is the outcome of W. Bush’s “Compassionate Conservatism” finally being payed out to its logical conclusion.

Going back to the 20’s the GOP has played-out the moralistic conclusion that if you are poor it is your own fault for lacking the ambition to make money.

And no Social Security checks for this old fart. How is that blameless? I say *both sides" are full to their eyeballs in blame as this should have been done when Yellen first said funds were running out several months ago. And Biden goes to Japan when time is critical… Actual adults would’ve raised the debt ceiling in January. But no, both sides sat on their thumbs and fucked off. I am pissed at the whole crowd.
Look, Kev sent the House home. They are leaving DC!! Who will vote then on raising the freaking ceiling? None of them deserve their pay checks,

Jeez, you don’t seriously think it would hit bank CEOs first, did you?

What was Biden supposed to do? I mean, truly, what should he have done differently? McQ isn’t negotiating; he’s posturing. Biden is going about the business we elected him to do and nothing more. As others have noted here: Biden has presented his budget and said no negotiation on the debt ceiling; full faith and credit and all that. Biden has done what he can do.

The budget and the checks are the responsibility of Congress, more specifically the House. McQ is abdicating his responsibility because he’s seriously afraid of what’s coming and he is totally unequal to the task. Totally.

McQ can fix this quickly. The Dems have something in their backpockets, but at the end of the day, this is the House that can fix this. Biden has little he can do that will truly fix the issue.

I’m learning a good bit about this process on here - I don’t know that Biden can fully fix this without 14A. But we are headed for a precipice (think Thelma and Louise), but McQ has the steering wheel.

I’m just angry. Very angry at how DC plays around. I cast blame where i should not. The lot of them have dropped the ball… my age cohort will hafta suffer for their screwing around. The debt ceilibg should have been raised in January at the latest. I just feel both sides failed us

I’m with you, Darr.

But I can only place blame where blame belongs. We don’t negotiate with terrorists. The GQP is now a terrorist organization with respect to our nation’s economy. When there was even the hint of compromise from the WH, we all went into a bit of a tailspin.

No, we need to keep the blame focused where it belongs - McQ and the Horse Feathers caucus. The media have a part in the blame as well for framing this travesty as a good thing for the GQP and a bad day for Biden.

The last time I went to Target, my cashier was an elderly man with mobility problems. I could only think, “I don’t want to be in this position in 10 more years.” I think I was weeping when I left the store.

That’s what the Repubs want for all of us. I’ve already had a friend come out of retirement because the last market plunge decimated her savings.

I think there was a belief at one time on the Democratic side that no sane Republicans would ever allow a situation where social security checks stopped going out. Those days are gone, as are sane Republicans, who were at least fearful of the votes they’d lose even if they didn’t care a wit about the aged and the poor.

Who knew we’d wind up with McCarthy and the Freedom Caucus? Even now I find it hard to believe they are in charge of a branch of our government. I saw a clip of Marjorie Taylor Green getting laughed into oblivion by Democrats as she sat banging the gavel at the Speaker’s desk. Loved the laughing but who would have ever thought we’d see that stupid, crazy as a loon evolutionary throwback sitting in that position?

But in the end, I don’t think Biden will let this happen, or at least he’ll go down fighting hard. And after that, the oligarchs will have to step in, when the housebound and the old can’t pay for their cable service, or their internet, or their cellphones. And when they simply stop buying shit and the economy generally crumbles.

So no, nobody thought sufficiently ahead, and you have every reason to be angry, though for some reason I find I’m not. I just wake up thinking it’s just more garbage to add to the pile. I never expected anything better from this session of Congress.

I think that’s one of the points of the exercise: alienate people from government completely, and make privatized services more alluring. I also suspect that it’s a covert push to convert more people to white supremacy, since minorities will be blamed for the financial disaster.

Biden being in DC would not have made one bit of difference, and just would have made the president’s schedule another hostage to the crazy caucus.

There goes a third to half of my income as Members leave DC…

And every last one of them will face no competition and be re-elected in 2024.

You know it’s coming.

If they skip your payment, you will eventually be made whole. They always did that on federal shutdown non-payments. Still sucks and shouldn’t be happening.

What any Republican would do is keep America from defaulting in spite of the Congress be it through the 14th amendment or some “gimmick” like minting a trillion $ coin or selling bonds at a premium.

In my view, Biden will be to blame for a debt ceiling default if he does not do what any Republican be it Bush, Trump, DeSantis or any serious Republican candidate would do in his position.

Noting again that all McCarthy needs do is put a clean bill on the floor of the House and it will pass, I see know way for McCarthy to make any deal that enough Democrats will go along with in either the House or the Senate to both pass a bill and keep his Speakership. Therefore in my view this game of chicken between Biden and McCarthy is all show and either Biden will use his power or America will default on its debt.

Now being in the corporate world, I can tell you that no serious person in business wants to see America default. But as most of them think they benefit personally from Republican policy, the nation is not their first concern, they will savage Biden regardless of what he does or does not do.

Biden also needs to be concerned about a Supreme Court that would unanimously support a Republican doing what Biden needs to do to stop a default, but then it will be the Roberts’ Court default.

But unless McCarthy is willing to give up his Speakership, which considering how he got the Speakership I find very unlikely, there he will not put a bill on the floor of the House that could pass the Senate and therefore Biden must use his power to stop a default just like any Republican would do if in Biden’s position.

The Members in my opinion do not rate their pay
Deadlines to get things done do not seem to matter anymore to members of Congress (both chambers) so, why should I pay taxes on time? Or at all??

Cancel all their flights home! Lock them all up in the Capitol until they raise the debt ceiling.
