The problem is no Repuke Pres has ever faced this crisis so there’s really no basis for that assumption. When a Repuke is Pres & Repukes control the House, debt is irrelevant. When a Repuke is Pres & Dems control the House, Dems hold their noses and raise the debt ceiling every time because they’re adults. When a Dem is Pres, Repukes do everything in their power to create a debt crisis, even when they’re the minority. Every. Single. Time.

We absolutely know from other actions exactly what the last two Republican presidents would have done or have you forgotten Trump’s emergency declaration to “build the wall” or Bush’s ignoring congress in regard to the continued occupation of Iraq without congressional approval.
That is unlike Democrats, Republicans are not afraid to both use power and push the limits of that power.
So I iterate, if any Republican was president and faced with a similar situation, we know they would use their power to continue to pay bills and avoid default.
Good thing there aren’t any retirees in his home state of Florida who depend on Social Security and Medicare payments.
Oh, wait…

If, by minorities, you mean Republicans. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that, when default aciually happens, Republicans will get the blame for it, for two reasons:

As Josh recently noted in a blog post, Republicans always get the blame for shutting down the gov’t for the simple reason that it’s always their fault - they’re the only ones who do it, and
-
Republicans are anti-gov’t, Democrats aren’t - and when the gov’t shuts down, people naturally blame the party that’s against gov’t.
Sure, Republicans willl blame minorities (and, of course, Democrats), but everyone else - Dems, indies, cats, dogs, gray aliens, circus clowns, hobbits, etc. - will blame Republicans.

There will be suffering as we old farts see no Social Security while Members will continue their base pay of $174,000/yr. The military will not be paid. Contractors will not get paid. Members office staff will not be paid. I can see picket lines around the capitol.
All of this was avoidable and utterly unnecessary.

Right, I could’ve been clearer: what will most likely happen versus what the GQP probably believes will happen. They’ve prospered for decades blaming Black welfare cheats for [insert a thing here], so given the opportunity to blame a once-in-a-lifetime economic meltdown on shiftless minorities and the Democratic policies which have coddled them, I don’t see how they would pass it up.
When the world is in free-fall and the wolf is at the door, it becomes easier to convince people that all they need to do is burn some witches to make things better.

again. First is was having his way with a juvenile, then he got cleared of stat rape and sex trafficking charges for the same. Now this. His silver spoon runneth over.
Several years ago I checked the dates when my social security check was deposited in my credit union. My. birthday is on the 6th. Check was deposited between the 3rd and the 14th. I don’t remember how many years ago that happened.
There’s this construct that most of us are familiar with called a rhetorical question. It is not a literal or a loaded question, but you do you and take it that way if you want.

- Spend what looks like pocket change to you on slobbering cheap pols in bad suits so they dance how you tell them to dance, no matter how evil or stupid or destructive it is
- Buy or invest heavily in a media outlet so they publish your lies as facts and get the great unwashed masses to believe that ending social security is a great idea

I suggest we tell Members to do their jobs in a timely manner with civity and to not wait until the House is sent home by the majority leader at a most critical time. Five days until X-day when we hit default. If you look at the published House schedule
You will see no more “business days” exist before June 1 to vote and pass bills
So you see, it’s not me who is unnecessarily getting upset. I would say it is most necessary. I would prefer to not sink our economy and that of other countries who hold great piles of our debt. It is looking very ugly at this point. I do not enjoy anger but right now there is no alternative as voting is 18 months away and phone calls fall on deaf ears as do emails. As opposed to what makes cult members angry and fearful I do have actual real facts on my side this time around. I am not making anything up out of thin air. The US government is 5 days from failing to pay its debts part of which is my income. And it is thru no fault of mine. I don’t get to tell my electric or gas company “Gee fellahs I just can’t pay ya for a while” . They won’t care. And if I do not pay the bill I get cut off. This mess was completely avoidable had the two sides gotten together 4 or 5 months ago whenever it was that Yellen said the crunch was coming and she had to juggle funds to make ends meet. The two sides quite simply failed to do their jobs.

One more thing if I may… Janet Yellen is saying the US government as of 6/1/23 will not be able to pay its obligations. Well, this is a little confusing in that the US government has the full legal authority to print money. However much it wants. How then can the government run short?

You are saying that Republicans, who barely control 1 half of 1 branch of Government should have more power because they are ruthless than Democrats who control the presidency and the upper chamber.
The question as I see it is does Joe Biden and the Democrats have the strength to do what is right for the people who elected them to high office?
Having that strength means not continuing to play by the Marques of Queensburry rules when the other guy is kicking you in the nuts.
Democrats control the upper chamber and the presidency. Republicans by a few votes control the lower chamber. The choice is; 1) to allow Republicans to destroy America OR force Democrats, who again control much more of the Government then Republicans, 2) to concede to all their demands and enact all their agenda or 3) use the power given Democrats by the people of America for the very reasons to deny what Republicans are trying to do.
That is the choice Democrats have is to govern by using the power the American people gave them for these very reasons or to let Republicans govern over the will of the people.
If Biden fails to use his power and instead turns over governing to Republicans because they are threatening to destroy America when he has other choices, he specifically and Democrats in general are to weak to retain power.
Best choice now as I see it is the discharge petition that all the democrats on the House have signed onto. Just brow beat 5 goobers into signing and we can stop the madness.

The debt ceiling law was created in 1917 and went thru some revisions afterward. I think it is time to get rid of it.
