Except, they didn’t do that when it counted. The FL 2000 exit polls accurately reflected how the voters thought they had just voted. Fucking butterfly ballot moving 10,000 votes from Gore to Buchanan made the difference, and the media refused to say it even with their own exit polls reflecting that.

Some are, and it is better than purely electronic systems. What they do, is the voting machine takes the voter’s choices and prints a paper ballot, the voter looks at the ballot to see that everything’s kosher, then walks the ballot over to a scanning machine, where the ballots are counted. The ballots are retained for spot-checks, audits, and recounts.

Thanks. My personal experience in recent years is I fill out a paper ballot. One of the volunteers runs it through a scanning machine.

FWIW, it seems like having a separate machine to fill out a paper ballot, which the voter then has to check, creates an unnecessary step.

I’d be fully in favor of shit-canning the electronic voting machines and going back to paper ballots only. Paper ballots are more transparent because they require no particular expertise to understand how they work. It would be worth the wait to find out the results, and/or the expense of hiring poll workers to shorten the wait.

Then, you’d be willing to give up knowing who won the election on election night? Counting all that paper (correctly) by hand takes time and budget. It’s cheaper to have vote tabulating machines. And faster.

When all this stuff was swirling around in the moment, it was (at least for me) a little harder to take seriously. It still is, because of how nuts it is, but looking back and realizing they meant to do this kind of thing is actually pretty staggering. It was like a collective madness that led them all to think they could do any goddamn thing they felt like. Relying on handwriting’s a bitch in counting ballots, people do all sorts of weird shit like circle the box instead of filling it in, crossing out one vote and making it another, stuff like that.

At least in theory, having them do it all on the computer then print out the final eliminates a lot of ballots being tossed.
