House Approves Fines Of Up To $10k For Lawmakers Who Ignore New Security Screenings

The House of Representatives on Tuesday night voted to approve hefty fines for lawmakers who eschew the new security screenings at the entrance of the House chamber that were established in wake of the deadly Capitol insurrection last month.

Several GOP lawmakers have resisted the new security measures, including far-right Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), who is infamous for her hardline pro-gun stance (and her embrace of the QAnon conspiracy theory).

Gun lovers like Rep. Boebert probably won’t object if they change the penalty from a fine to being shot by firing squad.

All Republicans who were present voted against the measure

Wow. I knew shit was mad partisan, but every Repub is against common-sense safety measures? Didn’t they approve of these things for airports and schools and stuff?

I’d rather they were refused entry.

The usual suspects will ignore this measure and continue to flout screenings. Their loyalists will just be tapped through fund raising pleas for the money to pay the fines. I’d even imagine Green, Boebert, et al will connive a way to have all this generate magnitudes of money in excess of the fines generated.

Under the new rule, the House sergeant-at-arms will impose a $5,000 fine on those who flout the screenings the first time and a $10,000 fine if they do so again. The fine will be taken out of the offender’s congressional salary if they do not pay it within 90 days.

The first time? There shouldn’t be a “first time.” There should simply be one time, with $50,000 fine automatically taken from their check, followed by immediate expulsion.

The rules simply aren’t that hard to understand or follow. Fuck giving seditionists a second chance.

Or, how about this, if they attempt to evade lawfully-implemented security restrictions, you reject their entry, and if they try to force entry anyway, you take their ass to jail.

And put them on the No Fly list.

Now this needs to be enforced. I’d fine every offender to the max.

I concur.

That would require a significant number of republicans to vote to expel them, which isn’t going to happen.

That would arguably violate Article 1, Section 6 of the Constitution, so they probably don’t want to go there. Can’t stop them without “arresting” them in some fashion. A hefty fine doesn’t carry the same potential legal baggage.

“They shall in all Cases… be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same…”

Sorry, no can do.

That would also probably preclude putting them on the no-fly list as someone suggested above.

Nice. I’m pretty damn sure if the REST of us have to do it when entering a government building or flying that Congresscritters can slap their brave on and waltz through the metal detector.
