I saw something like that - I think it was linked to on one of TPM’s comment threads (last week sometime?) Pompeo is slimy enough to fill the implied role. If that was indeed the plan, and Pompeo is compromised, I hope Jack Smith or someone in one of the 3-letter orgs can bring him down.

I looked for Joyce Vance (whom I love, by the way - she never fails to impress with her eloquence and perspective and caution) to point out that, only in some states were these “electors” meant to supplant the actual, legitimate electors.
In others, they were conditional; that is, the “alternate electors” would only put themselves forward if, say, courts or state legislatures had ruled the actual electors to be illegitimate for some reason. That way, they’d be protected from liability, civil or criminal.
In Michigan, it appears they skipped that part and went full speed ahead. And, boom.

There is no reporting that Grassley was ever read into the conspiracy. He would be an unreliable co-conspirator. So far as I can tell, he just picked up that Pence was a questionable participant, and so therefore rhetorically elevated himself into the role of President of the Senate when a reporter asked him about a possible Pence absence on J5.
Remember, this was all very much out in the open. The coup attempt was not particularly secret, just very dumb.

I’m sorry for your son’s death. I wish I had better words to write, but I don’t. I know the fear: I spent 52 weeks fearing the sight of government cars with uniformed officers when my son and daughter-in-law were in Afghanistan and another 52 weeks worried whenever my son called (because she’d gone back for a second tour). I’m sorry you have to live the reality.
