I’m so fed up with racist right wingers whining about the “poor white man”. If they have it bad, it’s THEIR responsibility to make it better. NO other part of society around the world has had it better. STFU.
Serious question. Does anyone here think that the ignorance of the American general population is greater here than in other countries? I’ve travelled, but never lived anywhere else.
Which is why Democrats need to be more aggressive with the "news’ media. Start throwing red meat…“The GOP has ambassador Steven’s blood on their hands”. If they show the bias you describe, Democrats need to push back and start talking about the conservative bias of the media ad nauseum, and not be afraid to get a little nasty about it. Again however, I’ll say it again…Democrats are effete cowards who disdain confrontation.
Dinesh D’Souza, yet-to-be-incarcerated felon, thinks so, and has said as much. Aren’t “newsmakers” always “[far] right”?
Surely there can’t be a SCOTUS outrage every day. Thank our lucky stars for slow news days.
C-SPAN needs to do more to cut off the overtly racist comments like this. I defy anyone to have the nerve to tell me that the the guy with the Tweet wasn’t overtly racist. And Steve Scully had the nerve to read it out-loud. There is a point where your free speech crosses the line into hate-speech, which the Supreme Court has agreed is the equivalent of obscenity. It is simply not protected speech. And the same definition, as nearly as I can remember it from Constitutional Law some 30 years ago, applies: “…we can’t tell you what obscenity is, but we know it when we see it.”
Irony is watching those who glorify the rights of individuals and oppose collectivization while seeing individuals only as parts of whatever racial group to which they belong.
Basically, we agree. I’m not sure I buy into “effete cowards” but Democrats are definitely, on the whole, way too concerned about appearing to be “nice” and “reasonable” on the mistaken assumption that the average voter responds positively to these characteristics. Too willing to compromise when the facts and situation don’t even require it. Krugman wears his “shrill” moniker as a badge of honor and sometimes refers to himself as “the shrill one”. Democrats could take lessons.
I disagree with your characterization of all Democrats as cowards. Progressives and liberals have the “tolerance” mindset. By tolerance, I mean that they put a premium on the “market-place of ideas” concept and that allowing more speech is necessarily good in that concept. While I disagree with that point of view, as does the US Supreme Court’s exceptions to Free Speech (as in, “… shouting fire in a crowded theater.”) it has set out, I don’t think that position is necessarily cowardly.
Liberals and Progressives will argue fiercely for their position, but only after listening to the other persons rant. The just are more of the mindset that debating rules apply. Wingnuts are not of that mindset. Because the news media entertainment complex has its Maury Povich bias, it favors the screaming, talking-over type of discussion (I use that term very, very loosely). Confrontation and blood sells ads. Ad revenue is what the news media entertainment complex has as its new Mammon, not necessarily real, substantive news and/or opinion. “If it bleeds, it ledes.”
The liberals and progressives need to, until such time as a better way is found to control bomb-throwing journalism, become as aggressive and distorted as the wingnuts. Then we can truly all be considered wingnuts. Like I said at the outset, I both agree and disagree with your perspective. However, I will defend to the death your right to say it. Which leads us into an even more polarized society with gridlock for government.
Which is exactly how we got in the mess that we are in now. “History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of
social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.”-Dr. Martin Luther King
Your answer here is just as wrong as the person who described Democrats as “cowards.” Progressives and liberals believe in the “marketplace of ideas,” and thus tend to let the other side have their say according to the rules of debate. The wingnuts have no such compunctions. They simply continue their diatribes until the news cameras are turned off and they have not only had the last word, they have had the only word.
I was born and reared in a foreign country (where I have dual citizenship and very proud of that and the fact that I am a ‘Native’ born US Citizen). No, I do not think the average USA voter is more ignorant or less well educated than those voters in foreign countries. The ARE more apathetic that voters in those countries. I the country I was born in, their most recent election say a voter turn-out of in excess of 85%. A rate that makes political scientists mouths water at even 1/2 that rate in off-year elections.
When a Radio or TV host hears the subject getting Freeped by Haters, they should drop the discussion and find something else to talk about.
Which means absolutely nothing. If “white eastern liberals who showed up” had their contribution overrated, how in the Hell can you say they were overrated when the very essence of advancing civil rights in the southern part of country was after Blacks were given the information that they COULD seize power by voting. African-Americans had their lives put at risk, but so did the “white eastern liberals who showed up.” Tell me, when was the last time that YOU put your life at risk by just showing up at a political information cause. I think you owe the memories of James Earl Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner an apology. NOW!
You are so right. When Dems do try to respond with aggressiveness, that’s when they have the narrative ripped out from under their feet. The conversation shifts entirely away from the issue. They’re painted as extremists and we get a lot of “Look at how crazy the left can be. Both sides have their loonies, therefore both sides are equal, therefore let’s just assume that the Republican side is mostly right on this issue because we have to take a commercial break. When we return, 3 out of 4 of my next guests will be Republicans. Stay tuned.”
I get so tired of hearing about “Oh those pussy ass bitch Democrats” on threads like this. The means through which the nation receives its political reporting are tinted big, bold, bright, sun-ripened red. Though that’s not the only factor at play (trying to fight a unified front of stubborn talking points with actual facts is always an uphill battle), to pretend like the problem doesn’t exist is to be halfway to being the pawn the powers-that-be think you are and want you to be.

I don’t get no respect because of my age:
I played a slot machine.
Got 3 prunes.
I went to a hooker.
I dropped my pants.
She dropped her price.
White privilege is feeling the heat.
Yes, us white guys feel SOOO discriminated against. NOT!
Thank you!
You’re misreading my statement. I know full well what Chaney, Goodman Schwerner died for. However, you ought to demand that LBJ issue some apologies, one dead man to a few others, because he said this as part of the effort to deny credentials to the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party at the 1964 Democratic convention. Also in on the effort to deny credentials were Humphrey, Mondale, the head of the UAW and Adam Clayton Powell. That’s who didn’t support the efforts made by whites.
Hell the northerners are more upset about this. They say, they call me right and say that the negroes have taken over the country. They’re running the White House. They’re running the Democratic Party
Don’t presume to understand what I believe. It won’t get you far.
