If we’re placing trifecta bets, my other two would be on Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Florida.
I don’t know what does it take to make half of an overheard sentence as newsworthy as the murder of nine people?
My main objection was to the comparison of the urgency of reporting on a fluff piece like this to the Charleston shooting. But is it really to much to ask that if they are going to report on something like this that they maybe take the time to develop the story beyond “someone said something about throwing a shoe shortly before the Pope arrived, but we don’t know who said it and we aren’t even sure if they were talking about the Pope.” Do some sound analysis, see if they can’t clean up the audio capture to get the rest of the statement, maybe see if they can’t track down some of the people in the video and asks if they overheard it.
Update: Okay, seeing your update I can kind of see where people are coming from with regards to why this is newsworthy, but I still have to say that when I finished reading the article my first reaction was “that’s it?” and wondering why if they were going to report on it they didn’t wait until they had developed the story more.
What’s this? You don’t remember her lovely “Naughty Monkey” pumps? They were all the rage amongst the Kool Kids for awhile there.
“a” crazy person? This was a joint session of Congress.
oops… i’m guessing this wasn’t the soundbite little wolfie was expecting… lol
granted, it’s a disgraceful comment; but is it confirmed it was from a republican woman? and how is it known the target was the pope… she could have easily been speaking about any one of those members – a target rich environment for sure…
How typically and unsurprisingly Republican. Let’s ignore threatening physical violence against the spiritual leader of over a billion, the Pope was the GUEST of YOUR LEADERSHIP. I would like to know who said this, if only to hear their explanation and the response from the leader of the diocese their district is in. Of course it will be along the lines of, “I apologize to anyone I offended, but my comments were intended to be private and I was only figuratively joking around.” Here’s the deal, a good portion of the 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide and 70 million in the US would think that kissing this man’s feet would be the literally be the highlight of their lives. Does the person who said this have any idea whatsoever how comments like that play in Latin America or developing nations where Catholicism is dominant? The Speaker (good Catholic he claims to be) needs to figure out who this is and really put the hammer down.
Say what you want about Dubya, but I give him credit for 2 things…
-
His relative quiet since leaving office.
-
His ability to dodge a shoe. (i smell a sequel to the Dodgeball movie, “If you can dodge a shoe, you can dodge a ball…”)
Because they have a sense of Huma?
That was my first thought too.
There’s going to be enough real outrageous stuff said during the Pope’s visit, TPM, no need to try and get a thing going about something this stupid and unverifiable. It’s almost as bad as the Jeb Bush retarded quotation marks. Cheap.
Nah. That voice wasn’t screechy so it couldn’t be Palin.
Snicker.
Sounds like Marsha Black.
Marsha Blackburn, but that’s what I though, too.
Google “palin superman”. I apologize in advance-you’ll never be able to unsee that. image.
“Neither the identity of the speaker nor the theoretical target of her airborne shoe were clear from the live feed.”
There’s no there there.
Steve, I love you like a brother, but I think you’re wrong here. One watches the video of the Pope walking in, and one makes the connection between the image and what the woman is saying, but we don’t know if the woman is talking to someone about her cousin Fred at the bar-be-cue. She isn’t seeing what you are seeing, and as thepsyker says, it is perfectly normal to make small talk before an event.
They don’t, but you do.
No. We don’t know where the mic is. We certainly don’t know that it’s right by the Pope. It could be placed by another wall, for all we know.
Why couldn’t it have been a Democratic woman talking about McConnell or Boehner? Lord knows, I’d like to throw shoes, a cinder block, a couch at the both of them.
I’m with you Steve, I think whomever it was, was talking about the Pope. And, I think if someone really wanted to, they could figure out who it was. Republican? Guaranteed. There is a list of who was in that room, very high security, so you know SS knows exactly who was in the room.
It wouldn’t be hard to figure it out if someone bothered to do so. You can narrow it down to a woman, who was in close proximity to that mic at the time. Shouldn’t be hard, don’t even have to get all NCIS about it.
