And Eastern European is code for so many less tasteful names.
Right. So we have to drag them kicking and screaming into the latter 20th century? Why should the rest of us suffer for their revanchist bullshit?
Thus our national dilemma. The ideas, although not isolated geographically, have become so divergent that they threaten our democracy. There are millions of people in this country who do not believe in freedom of religion and who still support slavery. Yeah, really a lot of them. They want to live in a place where everyone thinks like them.
Perhaps we ARE headed for civil war. How well did that turn out for us last time? The sickness of white supremacy and theocratic rule never really went away and are not compatible with our current government. I donât see how they can be âaccommodatedâ in a nation that wants to live by the Constitution. There are too many of them and, as we see with Moore, their ideologies are deeply and permanently entrenched.
And do we have no responsibility to the people who live there, consider it their home, have deep roots there, who donât want to live in a fascist theocracy? Are you willing to pay more taxes to deal with the refugees and watch a tragic population exchange like the one in India and Pakistan?
And in what universe do you think that would âget them out of our lives?â Are you really comfortable with the idea sharing a border with an inherently militaristic fascist theocracy? Really? Do they get their share of the army and the Navy? The nuclear weapons? What if responded to the threat of the looming secular huminist regime surrounding them by allying with Russia and started hosting their troops?
This is where you end up when you go down these rabbit holes. It seems like a neat, easy, simple solution to complex problems that give you a headache, so hey, why not?
Except for the part where balkanziation pretty much always leads to constant war and hostility between the pieces of what were once a single nation. Revaunchist hegemony, subversion and, ultimately, weakness that invites meddling by foreign powers who smell opportunities for exploitation and maybe some payback.
And, finally, I for one am not crazy about the idea of breaking up the country, turning the keys over to Russia and China and generally telling the world âhey, our experiment in self government and liberal democracy and pluralism was a total failure, so have at it! Break yourselves up in to smaller and smaller pieces, toss out democratic governments and turn yourselves over to Mullahs and oligarchs and thugs. Itâs all good.â
Because we are all citizens of the same fucking country.
Unless you want to join the several secession groups the Russians are sponsoring.
And he will be elected Senator.
So weâll have yet another radical extremist Christianist anti-American crook in the Senate. Theyâll just take over our country seat by seat until we no longer recognize our nation.
Simply put we can not allow them to succeed. The battle is worth fighting. Give up and what you think you have saved you lost.
Very well said
And youâre quite wrong about that.
Liked the whole comment 100 million times.
No, trump is still a moron, and who know what he wants. He changes his mind depending on whoâs flattering him today
And 63 million morons all over the country voted for him.
A large percentage of those morons want to upend our Constitution and establish a fascist theocracy. In our smug complacency, we didnât even know how many of these maniacs there were until they started coming out of the woodwork and finally elected a fascist of their own. A large number of people within the borders of the US donât want our form of government any more. They want to crush us under their heel - or form their own country. It really doesnât have anything to do with Alabama.
Exactly. Furthermore there are plenty of non-crazy people who live in the South. Rather than aligning with the crazies (e.g., âGood riddance.â) how about showing some solidarity for the folks who are fighting the good fight in areas where, frankly, it is harder and more discouraging relative to other regions? Weâre in it together, yâall, and itâs going to take all of us to bend politics back in a progressive direction.
Looks like TPM , needs to start printing civic lessons along with history lessons so itâs readers can truly appreciate how fragile this great experiment truly is.
Thanks - we could use the solidarity. Thereâs been precious little from our side.
Yes, we do.
Yes, because we have this little thing called The First Amendmentâmessy as it is, at times, our democratic society requires that we take the bitter with the better, and that we keep trying to perfect the Union.
This. All of it.x1000.
So weâll have yet another radical extremist Christianist anti-American crook in the Senate. Theyâll just take over our country seat by seat until we no longer recognize our nation.
You do understand that you are now espousing the same rhetoric as the folks you oppose, right? Youâre just swapping out for a different boogeyman.
âWe canât afford another radical extremist God-hating anti-American communist in the Senate. They are taking over our country seat by seat, and we will soon no longer recognize our great nation.â
Sound at all familiar? Weâre supposed to be better than that.
âHeâs argued that the more Christian South needs to secede and form a new Biblical nation.â
Great! We are in agreement. GO!
âOf course the South is this remnant of a Christian understanding of law and government âŚ"
âOf course the South is this remnant."
FIFY!
Youâre right, of course ⌠never gonna happen for a whole lot of reasons. Plus, if they did secede, the moment it dawned on them that weâre the ones with the Social Security and Medicare, theyâd be banging on the door begging for forgiveness.
