Discussion: Report: Trump Could Stage Rally To Bolster State Of The Union Speech

Oh, this is is good. “too stupid” is what we chez blue used to call dubya instead of using his name. The time has time to dust it off and put it back in circulation.

I think he’ll show up with Mitch and several Republicans in toe. That’ll be his next political gambit. He loves staging a scene without having to contemplate how it will play out. He can’t think that far in advance anyway.

Anyone placing bets?

Sure I’ll bet he doesn’t show up and try to get into the House chamber.

OK tena, whoever turns out to be correct gets bragging rights, otherwise I can mail you some homemade cookies. I’m waiting on a gov’t subsidy (which I won’t go into) and due to this shutdown I know it won’t come now as planned, therefore I can’t afford real money…But…game on.

I’ll just bet for bragging rights - that works for me.

Wouldn’t it be grand if he commandeered the 101st Airborne, battered down the chamber doors and arranged a military escort to the podium? WOW!! I can’t wait. Cross your fingers.

That’s one way to get a mini version of his military parade I suppose.

He won’t show up at the House chambers regardless. I don’t think he’ll deliver it from the Oval Office either, because it was Speaker Pelosi who suggested that idea, in a passing comment. It would look like she’s making him do it. The broadcast networks might not cover an Oval Office speech with text sent to Congress anyway.

So it will be a written text submitted to Congress, and he’ll do a rally for the rubes somewhere safe, with a more inflammatory and ad-libbed speech. He has to be missing that rally crowd feedback bigly by now.

Exactly what I think. He will take the path of least resistance that gives him the most satisfaction and that’s it.

It probably requires a hundred various security personnel and Secret Service to secure such a rally. And they’ll all be doing it unpaid. Bad optics on top of bad optics.

He’s playing more distraction games. Keep the focus on Federal workers and Russia. Go through the legislative process. Don’t give him media oxygen for his distractions.

I don’t think he cares about the optics of unpaid security and Secret Service staff. He probably even enjoys it as a power trip. It’s the menials working even without pay to serve and protect their King. The rally crowds will see it that way too.

I think @jdkahler has it right. Speaker has control of room, can ignore or have Sargent of Arms remove uninvited President, and can shut down media and recess.

Only (recent) precedent I can come up with is the June 22, 2016 sit-in by Dem members over lack of gun control following Orlando. CSPAN was shut down, and House was recessed for a while. Dem sit-in members then started streaming from their phones (so apparently private property like phones cannot be seized by Speaker?).

Trump of course is not a member. Different rules apply. Likely, he thinks he “owns” The House.
I’m with @steviedee111. Trump would love to show up and make an illegal stink- for the ratings.

Madame Speaker Pelosi has not cancelled the formal invitation to dotard for the annual SOTU address. What she did do was to request, for security purposes, that it be delayed until government was reopened and fully funded so that the hundreds of security personnel needed for the event would be available and paid. As far as I know she did not cancel the invitation to make the speech or deliver the address.

"Dear Mr. President:

On January 3rd, it was my privilege as Speaker to invite you to deliver the State of the Union address on January 29th. The Constitution calls for the President to “from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union.” During the 19th Century and up until the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, these annual State of the Union messages were delivered to Congress in writing. And since the start of modern budgeting in Fiscal Year 1977, a State of the Union address has never been delivered during a government shutdown."

If this isn’t an invitation then what is it?

Just a few minutes ago on MSNBC they said that Trump is still planning on giving the speech from the podium in the well of the House. they are saying “She invited, we accepted”.

Personally… I would like to see Pelosi invite Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to be a real-time fact checker during the speech and have her comments appear in the chyron section of the screen under Trump as he speaks. The cameras used by the feed are owned by the House so Pelosi can do with them as she pleases. Knowing how much importance he puts on these words that dance across the screen under the talking heads, just the idea that someone might be stepping on his applause lines would probably drive him crazy. if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez feels that it is inappropriate for her to do it perhaps Al Franken might be free that night?
