Discussion: Report: Border Wall To Cost Billions More Than Trump Said, Per DHS Internal Memo

$25 billion? Typical big liberal gubbermint waste of taxpayer dollars by corrupt union Mooslim-loving Democrat concrete thugs.

Trump knows that his wall will be far less expensive, and will be see-through for added beauty.

Just keep in mind that Trump is figuring on stiffing people who do work on it, and its already baked into his numbers. The Federal government however, can’t do that, and WILL have to pay prevailing (or even higher) wages. Which will dramatically increase the numbers.

Nor will it be done “quickly”. We are talking about massive federal contracts…something with a budget this big takes on its own life and NEVER goes away.

I see the article reports a claim that the extra costs are related to having to comply with a bunch of laws with regard to federal contracting, construction in sensitive areas, and building stuff on an international border. The GOP and its contractors know how to fix that…

Trump is supposedly concerned about the trade deficit, so…
a joke from Barrons:

"A better solution: The U.S. government should pay for the wall and make sure it’s situated on Mexico’s side of the border, thus classifying it unambiguously as a U.S. export to Mexico. And of course, the work must be performed with top-dollar American labor. After all, the more expensive the project, the more the hated trade deficit with Mexico will shrink."

Idea:

According to the Tweeter/Molester/Grabber in Chief, our unemployment rate is 42%. Let’s create a new WPA and put all of these unemployed people to work building the wall!

Even $25bn sounds low. The ‘construction’ that they’re thinking of probably doesn’t account for the monitoring equipment that they would need to make it ‘effective’ (ie, watch for tunnels). And that won’t cover the annual maintenance or monitoring costs.
The ‘wall’ is not so much a means of keeping ‘those’ people out, as it is a monument to assholery.

I think Trump,s run over go above and beyond him screwing folks, i,e, he doesn’t know how to estimate a job.

Let’s just hope Mexico doesn’t develop aeroplane technology. Or shovels. Then the wall will be useless.

Trucks are still coming up here, wall or not, tariff or not. So there is that.

Yep. Once the administration discovers a Mexican north of the border, he’ll be saying, “Lousy wall. Totally worthless. We’re not gonna pay for it. Sad!”

And that is still probably a low ball estimate. It would probably be $15 million for just the material and probably just as much as that to pay the people to put it up. In addition to delays and dealing with difficult terrain.

Well first of all there are no roads to speak of in the Big Bend because building roads through there is damn near impossible and would cost a fortune.

You know, it’s funny - my therapist said yesterday that he thinks that one big reason trump want the wall built is it will essentially be a monument to his ego. Kinda like a trump version of the Great Wall of China. Only shittier and smaller

And the planes! What about the planes?!
Will there be anti aircraft guns? Missiles?

I also heard earlier that the infrastructure like roads needed to build a wall would actually help smugglers and “coyotes” because it currently doesn’t exist in isolated places like that - they already successfully build tunnels underneath current barriers.
