Discussion: Rand Paul, Enemy Of Socialized Medicine, Will Go To Canada For Surgery

This absolutely begs for additional reporting. The socialized aspect isn’t clear-cut hypocrisy because it seems he’s paying about what he would pay here in the states. But the argument against socialized medicine has long been that care is sub-standard – so why is Rand going to Canada? The way conservatives talk about socialized medicine, Canada is the equivalent of getting care at a MASH unit.
So why is Rand going? Get the answer on record!

Not surprised and yes, I can see how it could bring someone to a breaking point. Fire would be my option, LOL.

Pretty funny. Even if the clinic he’s going to is private pay.

Yeah, I find this really, really weird. I’m sure he could find a dozen surgeons in Bowling Green alone who could easily do this surgery. Or, he could make the hour and half drive to Louisville where there are numerous world class surgical facilities and surgeons to perform this surgery. This is just bizarre.

Do these guys even contemplate the optics?

Or, more likely, they simply don’t give a fuck about being hypocrites…

I clicked through and neither this nor the original piece had any reason for why he would do this. It’s not like in the old movies where you go to a specialist in Switzerland. It’s a no-big kind of thing. So why?
[/quote]With as much of an ass as Rand Paul is, and as much as he and Republicans buy into conspiracy theories, he’s probably concerned that a U.S. doctor would do something untoward during surgery.

Perhaps the biting on bullets or rawhide straps is offputting.

So, our national hernia is going to Canada. Maybe he will stay there. (He is truly following the practices of his namesake, not her ideals, but certainly her practices.)

So true, so true. How soon we let things like the Bowling Green tragedy slip from our minds…

Lol – I assume he’s going to a place like the Shouldice Hernia Hospital, which has very short wait-times since they’re so specialized. Like a lot of Canadian specialty institutions they cater to medical tourists as well as Canadian residents, the big difference being they can charge foreign nationals whatever they feel like (cha-ching!), whereas for insured Canadians they have to go by the standard rate card. Fun fact: they’re forbidden by law from letting folks like Mr. Paul jump the line because they’re paying a premium, so to your point this does rather pop the right-wing balloon about nutso Canadian wait times for everything.

Now in the interest of disclosure, there are definitely some procedures were we do have crazy wait times – it’s not like the problem is completely imaginary. If you’re a senior and need a hip & knee replacement, you could wait months, which is very frustrating and a source of much controversy up here. But they’re non-emergency circumstances by definition.
