Discussion: Dem Chair Gives IRS New Deadline For Trump's Taxes, Dismisses Legal Concerns

Team Trump wipe their butts with the US Constitution every day.

Do you really think they care about another sternly worded letter from Neal?

Empanel a select committee to consider drafting articles of impeachment NOW.

Best thing would be to get the tax returns by other channels, even illegal ones, and publish them all over the internet.

Likely TrumpGOP would scream and squeal and use the DOJ to try and punish democrats, but WTH. Let 'em.

Tell him, if heā€™d obeyed the law the tax returns would have remained private.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) On Saturday wrote to IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig with a new deadline

Well, that ought to do it.

set a new deadline of April 23

Thatā€™s the day Shakespeare died.

(I died a day before he did.)

What would the Republicans do?

We donā€™t have to follow suit but surely the analysis can begin there!

I remember feeling shocked when CEO pay was shown to commonly be 300~400 times the lowest paid employee. Dimon and Chase took that to a whole new level. 1,000 times?? This is one of those times I think, ā€œThere ought to be a lawā€¦ā€

Because, Iā€™m sorry, but thatā€™s just so wrong. Iā€™ve founded and run 9 companies over the past 30 years, and at no time could I ever say to myself, ā€œIā€™m 1,000 times more valuable than ā€˜the most juniorā€™ employee in my company.ā€ Everyone I ever hired brought value to the company that couldnā€™t be measured exclusively in $$$. The most Iā€™ve ever earned over a lowest-paid employee was 4 to 5 times their salary. But thatā€™s only counting the most junior. On average, I earned less than twice what my more senior staff earned.

When a company is profitable, everyone in it should be raised up. After all, itā€™s their productivity that is generating the bulk of the revenue. That, combined with good management and strategic planning, enables success for a company. Everyone who participates in that success should be rewarded accordingly. Thatā€™s my philosophy, at least.

Chase execs can justify earning millions a year. But not at the expense of their ā€œlesserā€ underpaid employees, and at a 1,000 times rate? Thatā€™s ludicrous. More evidence that our ā€œfree marketā€ Capitalist system is brokenā€¦

Exactly. Neal is basically giving them rope to hang themselves with if they donā€™t comply. And they wonā€™tā€“not even in the face of a subpoena. Then what happens? Is Rettig held in Contempt of Congress?

ā€œBefore the IRS failed to meet itā€™s deadlineā€¦ā€

I expect better from actual writers who have gone past the fourth grade.

Mnuchinā€™s letter allowed Neal to make stronger legal arguments in support of disclosure should the matter come before the courts. The Dems have the stronger legal argument and it wouldnā€™t be close if you assume a fair minded judge.

My only disagreement is in extending the deadline to the 23rd. I donā€™t see any reason why their argument would be less strong if they had just extended it to this coming Thursday or Friday.

Yeah the GOP wanted unrestrained Capitalism and that broke Capitalism. Again. Weā€™ve been through this now several times. 1929, 2008 - I donā€™t understand why they donā€™t get that Capitalism requires a strong middle class to work the way itā€™s supposed to work for everybody.

FDR tried to protect us from another Depression and the laws they passed worked. And then the GOP started rolling them back. And they simply wonā€™t acknowledge how wrong they are economically even when everyone can look at Kansas and see the result of their nonpolicy policy.

It probably doesnā€™t matter much anyway. AOC, Omar, Sanders, Harris, Warren, Buttigieg and so onā€¦ these are the vanguard of what I think will become a new party. Either a new ā€œDemocratic Socialistā€ party (which actually more resembles a European ā€œSocial Democraticā€ model), or a new ā€œProgressive Partyā€ that folds those ā€˜social democraticā€™ tenets into itself.

Either way, the momentum is building toward transforming us (kicking and screaming in some quarters) into a more egalitarian and socialized society.

Either way, the GOP loses, so I"m fine with that. Iā€™m just hoping we get more progressive policy into the core of the Democratic partyā€¦ so far so good, but it still feels half-assed and ineffective. I want to see more aggression from the left side of the aisle. Bernie style. Step up, speak plainly, donā€™t be distracted or thrown off message. Hammers, people, we need lots of hammers.

Itā€™s Whack-a-Mole time!

I think so. I want to see a little more sense of urgency and a willingness to frame the political argument. Itā€™s not the end of the world if itā€™s the 23rd, but what matters is the follow-up. Nancy has to set the tone with the WH/Executive Branch and say that her committeesā€™ demands will be respected.

The House isnā€™t in session for two weeks. Nothing happens until they back some time after Easter. But Iā€™d have say the sternly worded letter Nealā€™s R predecessor was certainly stronger than his. Oh. No. There wasnā€™t one in the two years Rs ran the House. Silly me.
