Yeah that’s why it’s kind of obviously shoehorned into that usage - but using they as a singular noun does not sound wrong anymore to most people, in my opinion. It’s been moving this way for so long that I really think it will become normal, correct usage eventually.
Nothing seems poised to put a stop to it - it’s too convenient and fills a vacuum that English creates by not specifying gender like Latin based languages do.
Well in case you missed it, apparently voter motivation isn’t an issue. Texas has doubled the number of voters turning out for the first day of early voting.
I’ve been hearing about motivation problems since the campaigns started because supposedly voters don’t like anyone who is running. Well something is motivating them. Dallas Co. almost doubled it’s previous first day of early voting turnout record.
I had missed it. Then I saw the numbers in Florida and Texas. A lot of white good ol’ boy Republican congress critters in Texas must be feeling the heat.
I think for once they just may be and they should be shaking in their shoes. There are going to be a lot of straight D ballots cast I think and it’s going to hurt them all over the state. That’s my deepest hope and it looks so promising.
We have a whole bunch of American Muslims living in Texas, too. We have whole suburbs that are now little Mumbais and Tehrans. It’s glorious!
“Duffy explained that historically, one party typically wins the majority of those on the map” – given a two-party system, isn’t this statement a tautology? Especially since with 7 states, and Utah not one of them, there is no chance of a 50-50 split.
Please fix the article and headline! The Cook Report says that Dems will pick up up to seven seats. To do so, they will win up to 17 of the seats currently up for grabs (because 10 of those 34 seats are currently held by Democrats). A clever mathematician would be able to list several ways of saying the same thing accurately, such as “Democrats will win half of the Senate elections” (which gives the wrong impression to those who did not know there were more Republican seats up this year than Dem seats) or “Democrats will end up with a majority of 1-3 seats in the Senate”, or “Democrats will pick up 5-7 seats and the Majority in the Senate”, etc.
I read the headline and thought, “Oh, crap, what happened to our Senate candidates that they are all going to lose except seven???”
She is even up among men by three points in a poll yesterday, not to mention her 20 point lead among women. And this does not include women who secretly will vote for H to avoid conflict in the family. Still think the final PV will be 55-39%. EV 400+
