Discussion: Cook Political Report Predicts Dems Will Win Up To Seven Senate Seats

Oh, I get it - you have the very best words. Congrats. The internet is a better place because of conscientious patrons like you, and your feedback is greatly appreciated.

The Cook Political Report reported Tuesday morning that Democrats will take back their majority and win five to seven Senate seats in November.

I saw Larry Sabato on the television this morning, and he was also predicting 5 to 7 seats in the Senate, and roughly 15 (10 to 20) in the House.

Except that in this case, “Cook Political Report” is a thing, not a person, so neither he nor she would be appropriate pronouns. “Cook Political Report” is a collective noun, embodying a number of individual people. American usage is generally to use singular verbs with collective nouns; British usage is to use plural verbs with collective nouns.

That is one sweet pic, @map2. Nothing more to say, just sweet, dude.

JeffreyBruner: Not Reid. Schumer

Thanks Beattycat. Very aware that all compliments are and should be aimed at my awesome dog and not me.

Certainly not in comparison to The Beast. Not even in same league. OT, is Prime Member visible on your screen? Not showing up on mine and have been long time member.

Yes, your pic has “Prime” in red letters under it. Hmmm … don’t know why it wouldn’t show up on your screen – though it could be related to one of the questions asked of you when setting up your account. IIRC, there were two questions regarding the “Prime” label. I answered in the affirmative to both and the red lettering under my pic shows up as well as “Prime Membership” in shaded lettering across, beside my name.

Thank you, appreciate the help.

Yes. “Likely” Republican voters in my extended family are not voting. Granted, one or two could change their minds at the last minute, but they detest Trump so much this is doubtful. So that means downballot Rs won’t get their votes either.

Ten.

We’re going for ten. Even Republicans are sick and tired of their do-nothing bureaucrats who aren’t even advancing the conservative agenda.

Vote Democratic. What have you got to lose?

Not to nitpick but we won 8 in 2008.

Currently a single Senator can put a hold on practically any piece of legislation. Iowa might be in for a surprise. How many days has Garland been held up?

Already voted here in FL…straight blue lineup!

When the “democrats” take back seven seats in the Senate AND 30 seats in the House, Call me. Otherwise, it’s all just fornication with numbers.

So what you’re saying is that it is better that the United States and democracy be left with only one political party?
I remember what we called that in the schools I attended. One party rule is called Dictatorship.
Of course, the Government is already an Oligarchy, so some might accuse me of splitting hairs.
I cannot quite understand why so many people are in such a blind rush toward abject glee to see a major political party torn apart. American democracy is based on the opposition of ideas, and compromise. If one party has things all of their own way, it is just as bad for people eventually, because without opposition, corruption rises, and democracy falls.
I am BY NO MEANS AT ALL endorsing the “Trumpy Old Party” or anything it stands for in the slightest. But there seems to be an impulse among some 'democrats" to see the Republican party go the way of the Whigs.
I can think of nothing that would be worse for America (and by extension, the World) than to leave one party alone and without opposition in charge of the United States for an extended period of time. History shows us that this is bad. It was bad in the 3 decades after the Civil War, and it would be even more calamitous today.
This is because both corruption and sloth would set in, and eventually, the single party is held in as much disrepute by the people as the other party once was. I would see the “Grumpy Old Party” forced to re-build itself, for a new age, but I would never see it distroyed.

Err… this is what the Republicans have been trying to force for many years now… when they have power they shut the Dems out entirely; when they don’t have power they blockade to shut down everything. While I’ve always been for balance/mixed-party governance in the past, I think we need a clean sweep for a bit to kind of reset the system, economic and otherwise, and a progressive sweep to counter the destructive right-wing oppressions of recent years. Not to worry; the parties will sort themselves out soon. Democrats will fracture in time if too many conservatives load them down, and split if needed; this country wasn’t made for single party governance. I’m sure that one way or another the “other” party (Republican or a new one) will quickly build to take over the “loyal opposition” role. By that time the demographic changes will probably have taken a firm hold and the political picture will be somewhat different.
