“But what the map doesn’t show you is that I won the places that represent two-thirds of America’s gross domestic product. So I won the places that are optimistic, diverse, dynamic, moving forward.”
People, not GDP, vote.
She lost 30 out of 50 states, and she still has not learned.
Too bad that she still has not learned not to criticize voters. Too bad that she campaigned as if winning the votes of people in low GDP areas wasn’t important.
Calling voters “deplorables” was wrong. Calling voters names or telling voters that they are wrong is not a winning strategy for getting them to vote for you. It never works.
Criticize candidates and policies, but don’t criticize voters, particularly economically disadvantaged voters.
It gets me that those assholes who complain about “political correctness” and chant “lock her up” and have “Hillary for Prison” bumper stickers got their shorts in a knot when she dared to refer to them as deplorable. Of course, they didn’t know what it meant, but…
Did a single goddamn person chiming in with their favorite dig even bother to read the goddamn statement before doing so? Anyone?
And yeah, though I rarely do this, did the author of this piece, and of the headline, read it? Because I looked and looked and looked and didn’t see the words “apology or apologize or sorry” anywhere. If they are using the word “apologize” in the less common sense of “explaining,” it was deliberately, and needlessly, divisive and provocative. And utterly unworthy.
Read the goddamn thing. Explain to me where she said something that was wrong or improper.
For close to thirty damn years now, every single word that she utters or writes is attacked as an atrocity and an insult to someone or other and an example of everything that’s wrong with her and Democrats. When that makes her try to be very judicicious and careful and clear, she gets attacked for “Clintonian” blah de blah. When she says “to hell with that then,” and speaks from the heart we’re back to the first attack.
And I expect that from the right and god knows I’ve long since given up on expecting anything else from the CDS-drenched idiots at the New York Times.
But it’s just so goddamn disheartening to see how gleefully people on the left join into the Catch-22 bullshit. It’s insane.
Go read what she actually said. Point out to me the parts that you think are wrong. And if you can’t, delete your comments and ask yourselves what it is about her that makes your reaction so different from every Democratic politician who says the same kinds of things.
Hillary’s problem wasn’t her absolutely right statement about Trump’s “deplorable supporters”. Her problem was her apology. When attacked, she should have said, “Just take a look at his crowd.” If she lost any votes, it was from not strongly standing up for her own statements.
Because of the policies of both Democratic and Republican administrations to remove incentives for providing pensions and instead requiring workers to plan for their own retirements via failed 401ks and so-forth, the mass majority of people approaching retirement do not have the assets to retire. In order to survive, they will have to keep working.
Meanwhile, most of the wealth from production gains in the last 50 years has been highly concentrated into 1% of the population, who have become extremely rich and have created an oligarchy. So now that they own the government, they want to cut social security and medicare.
Meanwhile, advances in surveillance technology, worker-control technology (like Amazon’s “shock bracelets”), and de-localized platform monopolies are slowly turning the workers into a wage slaves with no recourse.
How are you going to survive with no savings, no pension, and no safety net? The 1% does not care.
By the way, 401ks were just another vehicle for the financial industry crooks to steal from workers.
I read what she said and I stand by my comments 100%.
I understand that, but my point is you only lose support by criticizing voter or your opponents supporters. Telling people they are “deplorable” is not a way to help them change their mind and vote for you. Criticize your opponent, DO NOT criticize voters if you want them to eventually vote for you.
If she broke the rule then PP smashed it, incinerated the pieces, threw the ashes in a shallow grave, and then defecated on them. He openly and repeatedly attacked just about every single group of Clinton voters. Each day he attacks a different group of Clinton voters now even going so far as to go after the pensions of the husband’s of Clinton voters. But there are always different rules for certain people. Little is expected of some while others are chastised for doing exponentially less. If we want to change those rules we should probably start by not indulging in them ourselves.
I think you’re generalizing a bit too much. Trump’s main message was one of eliminating unfair trade with tariffs and/or taxes. That would MAGA by reopening many closed factories all across America. Sure, racism played a part, but his main theme was reopening Americas factories. That is still his main theme. When people called it economic anxiety they were phrasing it wrong, it was more economic hope for jobs returning to their area again due to a more level playing field. Undoubtedly, many thought that level playing field included less immigrants applying for those jobs under Trump but they don’t make up the majority.
Trump won mainly because of Comey’s letter, polling shows that. Out of the 35 Trump supporters I know, only about a fourth of them are racist. Most of those are mainly anti-Muslim. And only a couple are what I would call deplorable. Many are small business owners or self employed. Some are carpenters, plumbers construction workers, and farmers. They make up the majority of many small communities. Most are honest, hard working and will help out with time or money if someone is in need or just needs a hand. A few would never vote for Trump again, but not one of them would vote for Hillary if they had to do it all over again. Sure, it’s very unfair they have a mistaken image of her being dirty or crooked, but she did nothing to dispel that image Republicans and Trump painted of her.
It’s all bundled with “illegals” and racism though, the economic message was always inherently tied with racism (against the Mexicans or the Chinese or pretty much anyone non-white), I don’t think it’s possible to separate the two.
I don’t think HRC ever meant to insult voters, but many of her comments were taken out of context and managed, by others, for maximum ‘insult’’. As for the “backwards” comment, isn’t it projection by the people who decided that it was an insult? Her use of the word was the dictionary definition, after all. I guess she now needs to consider everything she says in the tribal Trump-way now since that appears to be the direction the USA is headed. Funny, it wasn’t that long ago that people complained that HRC was too careful and managed.
Does anybody really believe that anyone at all inclined to vote for HRC would suddenly be mortally offended by the use of the word “deplorable?” Ridiculous. It remains a painful truth that the American electorate, which I believed to be too sophisticated, too attached to their democratic traditions and too wise in the selection of their leaders(usually), voted for a phony, charlatanm fascist wannabe over an accomplished, sober, thoughtful career public servant. I’m not over that and I suspect I never will be.
