Discussion: Clinton Apologizes For Critique Of Trump Voters

MOST people don’t do ‘nuance’ Hill…maybe it’s time to just step back and just do ‘policy’ with wonks.

Please stop apologizing, Hillary. You were right, many in his base are deplorable, the coal jobs are not coming back and the people in that and other industries need job training for future employment.

You’re not wrong so please stop apologizing.

And at most it was a matter of clarification in the face of (surprise!) negative misreading of what she said.

This suggestion fails to account for millions that wouldn’t benefit from such measures. Many dying industries are not chock full of 20-30-40 year old people that made this their career straight out of high school. Their workforces have been dwindling for years, and due to seniority considerations the younger workers were often the first out the door as plants closed and/or moved out of country. When the final death knell sounded there were a slew of 50-60 year old people manning the shop. What does a person 5-10 years from retirement with a high school diploma, if that, retrain to do in this economy? Any rewarding work may take at least 2-3 years to master, and that’s AFTER what, a year, or two-three or more of retraining? You own a business and want to hire a 61 year old person that’s just finished a year of trade school? So they can leave just when he/she gets proficient only to finally retire anyway?

Just stop. No seriously, stop.

Compare and contrast this with a liar who never apologizes but double and triple downs.

Yes, let Trump’s pathology be the message. Unfortunately HRC can add little to the narrative at this time.

Let’s stipulate, she’s right. But there’s a difference between a columnist or a blog commenter and a politician. The former two can say whatever the fuck they want, and they should. The latter should remember that it’s stupid and counterproductive to insult voters. Hillary never got it. And thanks to her not getting it, we’ve got Trump.

Please stop Palinizing the American electorate, Madame Secretary, and gracefully exit the public eye so that the de-Trumping and restoration of Washington can proceed independently without any unnecessary entanglement with your campaign or personal baggage.

Nope, no apologies necessary. They ARE deplorable.

And Trump did “get it”, ergo foregoing insulting people and belittling entire classes of people? And being diplomatic, introspective and biting his tongue got him elected? Right, I can see it.

I didn’t think she needed to clarify any of her remarks. Every study post-election underscores how a lot of white folks were taken in by Trump’s sales pitch which was driven by race and culture issues, and not economics.

That really isn’t controversial or even debatable at this point. We have a disconnect between the academic/sociological analysis of what happened in 2016 to how we talk about it in the political realm. The reason is simple: Dems are starting to get white voters back in the post-Obama era and we don’t want to rock that boat with uncomfortable discussions on the subject.

While I get that perspective from the standpoint of being focused on winning elections (I’ll admit to wishing the comments had come out the day after the PA-18 race and not the day before…fortunately, they didn’t really get into the news cycle until afterwards), I think criticizing her is a mistake. She is reminding us of the narrative of why we live in the Trumpocalpyse. It will and always will be about race and gender. That should drive us and motivate us to turn out. If it’s only about the tax plan, that wouldn’t be enough to beat the Republicans. Trump is attempting to destroy our Republic and our inclusive culture. He will continue to sell his culture war to white voters and find enough to try to win. We need to keep reminding ourselves of why we fight. What happened in 2016 is why.

HRC is providing an important service. She is effectively woke center left talk radio. Let her talk and take the benefits of an energized base.

You never see Republicans comment on any of their unelected political voices, or even Trump for that matter. They pretend they didn’t hear a comment that they don’t want to spend time talking about. I don’t know why Dems can’t do the same. If you don’t want to talk about HRC, don’t talk about her. But her base is listening to her, they love her, and she is attacking the culture war that the GOP started and Trump advanced. That’s a good thing for the party and the country.

Whataboutism doesn’t cut it here. Sure, Trump alienated lots of people, and it was a big part of why he lost the popular vote. But in terms of the groups he alienated – African Americans, Muslims, women – most of the members of those groups were never his to get anyhow. Hillary’s “deplorable” comment absolutely cost her gettable votes in the midwest and thereby contributed to her losing the election. That’s just the facts.

Age discrimination. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Thank you

The fact that Hillary has to apologize for saying something that is demonstrably true while the electorate’s apparent preferred choice’s standard response to saying something demonstrably false is to tell a still greater falsehood–I think that says it all about the current state of politics in this country.
