Keep digging, Hillary. You got Trump elected once, I’m sure you can get him re-elected.
No, that’s an opinion. If you want to argue that its a fact, then show the polling data that clearly points to her dropping behind in the polls after that comment and never recovering. You won’t, because it doesn’t exist.
That statement, much like this one, was absolutely true. The tactical error she made there was backing away from it, instead of leaning into it.
Anyone who says they decided they were gonna vote for Trump instead of Hillary based on that comment…is bullshitting you. They had made up their minds long before that they were never going to vote for Hillary.
My suggestion - and I could certainly be wrong…I have been many times before and I will be again:
Publicly: Democratic public figures, in office or not - don’t criticize any voters or any of the American people, whether Trump voters, non-voters, Stein voters, etc. Don’t even come close to what could be spun as criticism. If you’re a lightning rod, realize it. Criticize Trump, the illegalities in his getting elected, his policies, his fitness for office, his tweets, his actions in tearing democracy apart…but not the voters.
Privately: Figure out how to get Trump voters back who should be voting Democratic based on their economic and other interests, and make the commitment and changes to do so. And fire up the base with substantive reasons to vote for Democrats, not just against Republicans, but certainly include the many reasons to vote against Republicans. And work on effective and pervasive messaging.
Prrrreeach!
Note to Hil: In the Deplorable’s world an apology is always a sign of weakness, always. Once you’ve said it, let it stand. They ain’t coming back around to your side of the argument in any event. They are, after all, deplorable.
You’re right. What potential Hillary voter or even undecided voter would change his/her mind on the basis of what something Hillary said about hard-core Trump voters. “Oh she wrongly insulted those people so now I must become one of them!”
“The tactical error she made there was backing away from it, instead of leaning into it.” Yes and I remember a collective groan went up from TPMers when she immediately apologized for her “deplorables” statement. But I doubt that this “tactical error” had any real effect on the outcome of the election either.
Clinton should go away. She broke the rule of politics where you attack the other candidate, not the other candidate’s voters. Yeah, she was probably right and she shouldn’t have apologized, but she still shouldn’t say it. She is not helping! Polls show she’s less popular than Trump even now.
Trump supporters are al vile human beings, no need to apologize.
Well a Hillary story on a Monday morning. Flame war in 5…4…3…2…1…
All Things considered, she has nothing to be sorry about or apologize for.
And what polls are those?
I saw it as more of a clarification, but whatever. She was, and is, right.
@paulw Should have read the next comment first. I agree.
Stop apologizing. If one learns anything from Trump and the GOP’s success-- it’s time to stop the apology tour every time a conservative cries foul…
Tell them to buck up. Or tell them “it’s a joke”.
This is the dumbest type of political correctness. Democrats should talk bluntly about the politics of race and class and how they intersect for working class whites (and their more affluent counterparts) who vote Republican. Just get it out there.
Hillary’s a polarizing figure for many reasons (including that she reads as a nouveau riche Northern Illinois snoot sometimes) and might not be the best person to lead a discussion that can actually reach some of those people, but hey, talk about it. Use moral language. Judge. Acknowledge the pain and the complexity and the derp. Her analysis is, in broad strokes, correct (and in nuances, too, when she has runway to go there, but that stuff doesn’t draw the headlines, of course).
Which is exactly what Conor Lamb did.
What did you expect? This is a person that uses the bathroom. Disgusting!!
Thank you,too
And Trump’s polling at what?
Um, what?
