Discussion: Clinton Apologizes For Critique Of Trump Voters

Who cares? She’s not in office. And she’s not yet a lobbyist or talking heads pundit. But I wish she’s just retire.

I think you’re overlooking a key aspect of her speech and demeanor. She’s a woman. That in and of itself entitles people to be as hateful and unreasonable as they choose regarding anything she says or does.

Welcome to America 2018.

Her speeches and her written, available policy position papers along with her actual experiences, not the fairytales of the rightwing repeated endlessly, demonstrated her honesty, intelligence and competence. Don’t make excuses for your “hard working friends”. I have known plenty like those you describe and hiding behind how hard they work and their helpful hands in times of trouble don’t excuse their racism, stupidity or gullibility.

I also said racism played a part in my comment.
My point was that while Trump attracted racists and etc, it’s not the only reason he won. Not all Trump supporters are racist. I live in an area of large potato farms and dairy operations. Mexicans are liked or at least tolerated. Blacks also. Most of the racism around my area is due to Islamophobia.

Fortunately, she didn’t. Unfortunately, the newb’s lazy, NYT style cheap shot misrepresentation is already picking up steam on Twitter.

I have rarely been so disgusted.

Really? I guess that’s why it’s only after a year + in office that Trump has delivered on his “main message” and his supporters are divided on whether they support it or not. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/03/07/poll-trump-steel-aluminum-tariff-444104 “Sixty-five percent of Republicans supported the move.” Compare that to their overwhelming support of his anti-immigrant policies. In any case, there have been a number of studies that establish quite definitively the racial and ethnic views that in fact motivated Trump voters. I would have thought that going with some version of the “economic anxiety” interpretation at this point would be little more than a joke.

Moreover you undercut your own point by the end. Khyber:“Every study post-election underscores how a lot of white folks were taken in by Trump’s sales pitch which was driven by race and culture issues, and not economics.” You evidently grant what he’s saying in the course of your post. “Out of the 35 Trump supporters I know, only about a fourth of them are racist. Most of those are mainly anti-Muslim.” Khyber said “driven by race and culture issues” not “racist.” Does being “anti-Muslim” not qualify? (And anyway that you think you can easily judge the level to which ideas of race are motivating the 35 Trump supporters you know suggests to me that you don’t have a very clear understanding of what that actually means.)

(Add: Also what is the dichotomy you are suggesting here? “Many are small business owners or self employed. Some are carpenters, plumbers construction workers, and farmers. They make up the majority of many small communities. Most are honest, hard working and will help out with time or money if someone is in need or just needs a hand.” So such people can’t be racist or driven by nativist sentiments? Really?)

Eh. I think it’s naive to believe this. Trump is the white supremacist candidate. All the madness is bundled together, you can’t pick and choose what you get when you vote for him. If you’re voting to improve your own financial situation, you know it’s at someone else’s (browner) expense. So you’re at least okay with racist policy agendas even if you don’t personally engage in that behavior day to day.

Campaigning on an issue and delivering on it are two different things. Obama campaigned on shutting down GITMO, he never did.

People who only see what they expect to see are always only going to see what they expect to see, so carry on. I was speaking to those who didn’t bother to look and therefore give themselves at least a chance to see things they didn’t expect.

You’re right of course. Retraining in particular does nothing for people who refuse or are unable to move, which is a lot of people in these places. Most of them could already get better jobs if they went somewhere the economy is growing.

It is something of a fig leaf. But then, it’s less so than Trump’s promise to magically make everything the way it was 50 years ago, and Bernie’s promise to cut the corporations down to size and then…I don’t know what’s supposed to happen after that, but it’ll be great.

Republicans are greedy/selfish, lacking in empathy or the ability to psychologically connect with differing people, racist/nationalist, and short-sighted. If we allow nature to take it’s course, they will breed out of our population eventually. Reptilian to the core. Rich or poor doesn’t have a lot to do with it. The inherent difference is that republicans are incapable of ‘experiencing life in another’s shoes.’ Every single policy position is dependent on a total lack of empathy for the suffering of others. Every single one. Fuck you, Hillary, for sucking up to those last-millennium evolutionary dead-ends.

Are you slow? You said they voted for him primarily because of his views on trade. So the fact that they have a relatively lukewarm reaction when he actually follows through on his supposed main message has no bearing on your point?? And the fact that Obama didn’t keep all his campaign promises does??
