Discussion: Biden Will Launch 2020 Campaign Thursday

Joe, please don’t.

I will still pop in, of course, because I love you guys, but it’s really getting exhausting and I suspect other women and POC have ditched TPM for the same reason.

So, here’s a super-provocative to white people take.

I know you don’t mean it, this way, but whenever I hear someone talk about “appeal to a wider audience of America,” I hear “more white people.” And the thing is, I don’t think any candidacy keyed to “get more white people” is ever going to be a way for Democrats to win another presidential race. “More people in every demographic,” sure, and we’ll definitely see that if the economy turns to shit between now and next spring, but to speak the unspeakable, as a white Democrat, I am a member of a minority-majority party and trying to pull white people back into it who’ve drifted into the whitey whitey white white supremicist white people’s party without in alienating the voters we already have and who we need to feel maximally enthusiastic is going to be tough. Not to mention the disappointed Berner problem we’d have with a Biden candidacy.

I agree with this wholeheartedly, but I suspect @brooklyndweller didn’t at all specifically mean reaching more white folks. To me, we need a candidate who brings the Obama coalition back together and that most likely means a man and most likely a white guy who is familiar and seen as competent.

From the looks of it, they’re going to be angry and disappointed even if it’s Warren. Draw your own conclusions about the roots of that. I’m not sure that in totality she isn’t to his immediate left.

And I did not mean it that way. What I was referring to was the very large amount of people who did not vote in 2016. This crossed over race, religion and sex. I’m also referring to more conservative Dems.

If I may as a POC as well, if you think this is not good, for the love of Dog, don’t go onto DailyKos. Ugh!

I have no idea what he’s doing as it’s clearly a vanity run based on name recognition (as was, I believe, Hillary’s entire political career starting with her first senate run). He’s now officially from the past. Yes, he’s still very much alive and vibrant and engaged and all that, and of course he has every right to run, but his politics, policies and accomplishments are decades old and peaking in the 90’s, and it’s so obviously time to let the new guard move in and take over, and he’s just getting in the way.

If you want to call me ageist, fine, call me ageist, but I don’t think that anyone much older than 70 should be running for president (including Bernie), for so many obvious reasons.

Plus, this whole will he or won’t he thing, which was either yet another example of how he’s the sort of pol who can’t make up their mind and commit, which is not a good quality in a president, or he wanted to use it to garner attention, which is kind of pathetic in someone who wants to be president, is just weird.

He’s had his whole life to decide if he wants to run, and if it takes him this long to decide, then sorry, he’s not fit to be president. But I always felt that about him. He wants to matter and be liked, but he lacks the leadership qualities a good president must have.

The more the merrier, of course, but he’s not going to be the nominee. Again, this is a vanity run and nothing I’ve seen so far tells me otherwise.

O god no - not this again. Not the poor put upon ever-bitching white working man. God I cannot do this again. It’s the perfect way to lose. Again.

It’s not a winning message for us at all. They are not our base and we don’t need to court them. We don’t need them. If our base turns out like it did for Obama and in Alabama against Roy Moore - we’re golden.

Anyone claiming that Biden is like Trump needs to have their head examined. Yeah, there are superficial similarities, like, old white male from the northeast, well-known since they were young men, more corporate-friendly than where progressives want the party to be, sexism issues, part of that whole old school white male backlapping culture, etc. But at heart they’re profoundly different people. Biden came from a modest background, is not and has never been rich, and has had to work his whole life. Tragic life story most people are familiar with. Basically decent and genuinely likeable man, even if sometimes “ugh”-inspiring. Has gradually moved somewhat to the left. A life of meaningful accomplishments. And so on. Trump is a piece of shit, period. No meaningful comparison. Biden is far from my preferred candidate, but he’s no Trump.

Yeah I completely agree.

Plus nobody else on this planet is like Trump. He is the black hole of humans - there is not one positive or light thing about him - he is darkness that eats light. He is completely awful down to the quantum level.

I would a billion gazillion times prefer Biden over Trump as prez even though he’s far from my ideal candidate. Biden is far from a perfect man but he in no way makes me want to vomit or spit in his face.

Yeah the fact that he’s touchy feely isn’t even that big a Ewwwww, it’s just inconvenient and not a good look for a president. He could modify his shit a little bit and be just fine.

He has a lot of other baggage and he’s not my choice but I would vote for him in a nanosecond.

Then I take it you’re against Buttigieg’s idea that we need to appeal to voters we’ve lost? Just curious.

Thank you. Equating Biden with Trump is even more purity batshit than the swill Ralph Nader served up equating Bush the Lesser with Gore. That worked out just swell.

SO generous of you.

There are white guys and there are WHITE guys, like the ones who dismantled Reconstruction. The current ones are enjoying a second round of Jim Crow.

I thought you would support any Democrat who could beat Trump, white or black. What happened? While I certainly can see why POC would be discouraged at this point, certain gains that they have made are not reversible. The right candidate, white or black, could help a great deal.

How he looks is not the issue. What he says and how he says it is. People age differently, some retaining a sharp mind into their 90’s. Nancy Pelosi is 78 and she has, for my mind, the sharpest mind in politics. Would that she could be President.

We will see how he campaigns and debates. For now, I find the ageism on this site disgusting.

Yeah because it’s not realistic to imagine that someone could have age-related mental issues. And so we’re not allowed to take medical evidence into account because: ageism. Even if we ourselves are aged.

So damn stupid.

I let my Prime membership expire sometime in 2017. Got a notice a couple days ago for a subscription at half price. I said $25? Why not? I see The Hive hasn’t changed one bit. Same posters having the same arguments. I didn’t really do it for The Hive. I did it for the EdBlogs.
