Last month, United States Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger testified about the heightened threat climate across the country. “One of the biggest challenges we face today is dealing with the sheer increase in the number of threats against Members of Congress— approximately 400% over the past 6 years,” said Chief Manger. “Over the course of the last year, the world has continuously changed, becoming more violent and uncertain.”
Trump’s little fascists were just getting warmed up six years ago.

We were stupid and lazy in 2016. We squandered the idea of a united Democratic Party coming out of the 2016 Convention and turned it into an intramural fight. How could we not understand that the courts in general, SCOTUS in particular and Congress were at stake?

Sure, it’s possible this incident will turn out to conform directly with the larger political frame through which we’re first seeing it. But it could just as easily turn out to be some bizarre, idiosyncratic confluence of events, every bit as stupefying as The Big Lebowski, completely disconnected from politics.
Let’s hold off on tarring this guy with any brush until we have more facts about him than can fit into a single headline. Posterity will make fun of people who couldn’t wait and then guessed wrong.
(None of which is to say that anybody should tolerate political violence, which commenters have rightly been denouncing. But this event might not even be that.)
