As UM President she oversaw billion-dollar budgets, helped them grow as a medical research facility, and engineered the politically delicate acquisition of Miami Cedars Hospital — located just across the street from the medical school and its principal clinical site, the public Jackson Memorial Hospital. Jackson’s doctors howled at the proposal, claiming that UM would drain them of private pay patients and leave Jackson with the uninsured poor, of which there are many in Miami.
She was able to defuse that situation and now the two hospitals work well together.
And when she first arrived in Miami, she had to contend with political fallout over the Clinton administration’s handling of the Elian Gonzalez affair. Even though she had nothing to do with it, the Republican-led state legislature, and its powerful Cuban contingent, publicly vowed to make her pay, and threatened to withhold state grants to UM.
That took some serious fence-mending to resolve, but she did.
She also helped rehabilitate the reputation of the Miami Hurricanes football team after numerous scandals for thuggish behavior.

Investigate the sales, and if she appears to have sold those stocks shortly after receiving classified or otherwise insider information due to her position, then sanction her accordingly.
I think that given what little we know, the “it was a mistake by a Congressional n00b” is plausible. Even likely. But investigate it just like we should when an R does it.

Sadly though, Barney Frank retired from the House in 2013.
Shalala is still not quite on the same level as “I-was-on-a-committee-receiving-top-secret-info-which-I-used-to-move-my-personal-stock-portfolio” Senators like Kelly Loeffler and Richard Burr. Wake me when a Dem does something maliciously.

Falling for the pretense that Democrats have to be perfect but Republicans don’t and using it to attack our own is what’s politically stupid.
There is a vast difference between selling everything to put it into a truly blind trust so you have no conflict of interest and doing the political equivalent of insider trading while telling the public the opposite of what you are trading on.

No, it sounds like an excuse. This is stupid and another avoidable error if the Dems didnt have their heads in their asses and were overseeing themselves effectively. As a lawyer, I dont get to claim “oopsy” about anything falling within my fiduciary duties and rules of professional conduct. Neither should she. Neither should there be cracks in our organization thru which she could fall due to her own negligence.

Feinstein is my senator, I respect her enormously going back to the days of Moscone Milk murders here when she became mayor, and she has said her husband did the trades that have landed her in hot water. There are no purposeful thieves in most of these stories, but there is blatant thievery being committed by trumPP family members.

I might add that along with all her other accomplishments is the fact that she was 77 when she was elected. How often does that happen to women. I’m going to say never. It seems Floridians appreciate what she brings to her office, so thank you for that.
