Dem Leading COVID-19 Relief Oversight Panel Didn’t Disclose Stock Sales As Required By Law

This is the most cogent response I can imagine. Frankly, I don’t buy excuses from anyone about “forgetting” to disclose anything. I worked in a highly-regulated industry and was obliged to submit many a filing. Oversight, indeed. Let us recall its double-meaning.

Well, if you were trying to shock me, then you failed – it just raised my estimation of her upwards!

She “misfiled” for the same reason anyone else does - she didn’t think she’d get caught.

It’s going to lead to trashing of Pelosi because she appointed Shalala. Wait for it.

This is the story which deserves the outrage people are beginning to pile on Shalala.

+1. She sold everything she owned. Everything, transferred to a blind trust. My guess is that the regulation does not apply to this situation. Certainly it is vastly different than holding and selling on news (Burr, possibly Laufler).

BTB this is like Finestein, whose assets are in a blind trust, the difference is that Shalala had to liquidate to get into a blind trust.

But yes, republicans will lie about this all…

Two things –
This is 99% a non-story. There is zero reason to believe that the non-disclosure was intentional.

That being said, Shalala has been in congress for more than 15 months — and there is no excuse for her failing to comply with disclosure laws at this point, other than sheer incompetence/ineptitude. The committee she was put on needs someone who pays strict attention to financial details, and regulations. Its pretty evident that someone as careless as Shalala is not the right person for this job, and she should be replaced ASAP.

Alternatively, she’ll resign in disgrace for whatever she may have done.
Needless to say, there won’t be an investigation prior to that: Democrat, ya know.

With all the extraneous blather/bluster by certain commenters on the other thread, THIS statement actually is a good one to discuss/consider. Thanks!

Which bottom feeder will be the first to shank her for a move up? Let’s all wait and see!

This is a terrible article. She sold the stocks because she was mandated to in order to set up a blind trust so she can serve? That would be legitimate…it is not even clear why she would be required to report such transactions. Is there any suggestion here that these transactions could have involved trading on insider knowledge, or that they lead to a conflict of interest? The article insinuates that without any basis.

The rump BernieBrats are all over it now—it’s another way for them to blame Nancy Pelosi for everything.

Kirsten Gillibrand is sharpening her shiv as we speak.

The former HHS secretary and her lawyers and accountants didn’t understand how this works? Bullshit. Sorry, I make no excuses for Dems just because they’re Dems, and WTF is it about Clinton people and doing politically stupid shit like private email servers (legal, but still stupid), taking hundreds of millions of dollars in corporate speaking fees (also legal but also stupid), and now this? Dems keep shooting themselves in the foot on such things. No, this isn’t comparable to what Repubs did by selling on inside information. Not even close. But it doesn’t help and can only hurt. Dems need to play perfect politics to win this, since the decks are intentionally stacked against them.

Often, perhaps usually, it’s not the legalities so much as the optics you have to worry about. It SHOULDN’T be that way, but it is, and you have to act accordingly.

This does not seem to be anything more than a misunderstanding by an official who liquidated her holdings.

I hope the right wing Wurlitzer does not blow this out of proportion and lead weak-kneed Democrats to abandon her.

This woman is eminently qualified to serve in Congress and on the COVID committee.

After a stint in the Peace Corps — she was among the first to join — she went into academics and became the president of Hunter College, then chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After serving as HHS Secretary fOr President Clinton, she served as President of the University of Miami, and then headed the Clinton Foundation.

She was elected to Congress in 2018 to fill the seat of Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who retired.

There are not too many people who can match her qualifications and commitment to public service.

The easy and obvious solution to this to replace Shalala on the oversight panel and move on.

Much better ratings too, I imagine. So there’s that.
