It’s unkind of me, I know, and unworthy of publication on TPM, but I want the world to know that I would not be unhappy if some trans athlete sent Abbott rolling downhill at a high rate of speed.

As far as I can tell, it means “people who have the common courtesy to address other people in the way they request.”

That’s absurd. Woke is used by the right as a derogatory accusation meme. Here’s a clip of a noted Republican author who was asked to define woke.
That’s the funniest thing I’ve read so far today, classic! Any thoughts @txlawyer?
It’s a pity the first one didn’t do the job properly.
ETA: Where are Fangorn and the other Ents when you need them?
Well, when your party’s entire policy program is built on oversimplification, an educated electorate capable of critical thinking and at least somewhat accustomed to the fact that it’s a complex world is definitely undesirable.
That does assume Abbot can think and has not deteriorated into a reflex caricature of conservative evil spawn. Recent evidence is not forgiving towards the first hypothesis.
10 U.S.C. §253. Interference with State and Federal law
The President, by using the militia or the armed forces, or both, or by any other means, shall take such measures as he considers necessary to suppress, in a State, any insurrection, domestic violence, unlawful combination, or conspiracy, if it-
(1) so hinders the execution of the laws of that State, and of the United States within the State, that any part or class of its people is deprived of a right, privilege, immunity, or protection named in the Constitution and secured by law, and the constituted authorities of that State are unable, fail, or refuse to protect that right, privilege, or immunity, or to give that protection; or
(2) opposes or obstructs the execution of the laws of the United States or impedes the course of justice under those laws.
In any situation covered by clause (1), the State shall be considered to have denied the equal protection of the laws secured by the Constitution.
He ran into one when he was a passenger in a car. That’s why he gets around in a wheelchair. Hard life lessons are lost on Abbott
Aaaand…what happens when an educated member of the electorate, who has no personal stake in transgender issues, is cornered and admits, “I personally don’t think a trans woman is the same as my mother and sister”? Does that mean that individual is ignorant, bigoted, transphobic and counter-revolutionary? Oversimplifying things is not strictly a right-wing phenomena.
It would appear “the fact it’s a complex world” really does not brook complex feelings. “You’re either with us or against us”, I suppose.
Like it or not, oil is going away. When that happens, Texas will be a welfare state. I’d be happy to let them cede. Let them be a new country- but their commitment to failed governance means an eventual failed state on our southern border, which would be easy enough to absorb and cut into two or three new states.
Then we get a new flag!
Ouch : - )
constitutional authority and said the revision “tramples” Abbott’s state law
New to how Supremacy works, Greg?
Abbott and Alito must consult the same bruha. Take a resolvable issue out of the present (presidential immunity, transgender kids) and place it in a dystopian future in order to incite confusion and partisan anger. It would be interesting to see how rational people, especially in Texas, are dealing with transgender interpersonal issues. Any links or resources, fellow TPMers?
Sure. Woke is the thought process that developed in the faculty lounges of liberal colleges that promotes victimhood. It’s the idea that if you’re straight, white, and fairly successful, you are an oppressor of “the other,” and need to support efforts to raise up those victim groups that are only disadvantaged because of, or in spite of, your actions.
It is similar to the answer I gave, as a freshman forced to take a Sociology course, to the extra credit question on a final: What is Sociology? I answered: Sociology is the art of making excuses for people who can’t hack it on their own.
(As an aside the instructor failed me, and I needed to drag his ass before the dean of men to get the “C” I deserved. I realize now that although from 1964, this is the epitome of woke thinking.)
Classic scapegoating. Authoritarian movements have always done it. And The trans community is perfect for them because our community is too small to defend itself. We have to have enough people to help us to make a difference. I believe they’ll lose these scapegoats like the have others, it will just take longer, though.
I’ve been around Abbott fairly closely. I would describe him as deeply cynical, with the performance of sourness, ugliness, and meanness resulting from the cynicism. He does not, for instance, actually hate refugees. He just does not give a shit about them because performatively beating up on them advances his electoral prospects.
I can 100% assure you that he wants to be president, and I can also 100% assure you that he is a very clear-eyed observer of his electoral prospects. If trump had bowed out of 2024, I think Abbott would be the GOP nominee. Instead, he’s running for 2028.
Yep, 100%.
I also believe his play has also been a shadow campaign for the '24 nomination if somehow Trump is unable to remain nominee.
We can expect him to ramp up his campaign in Mid November after trump’s legal cases fail… then an official roll out come spring.
100% agree. Abbott and DeSantis were both playing the same game of dousing themselves in trumpian gasoline, but only DeSantis was dumb enough to light the match.
Abbott is actually a more plausible candidate for trump’s VP than any of the other names I have seen bounced around. He’s an on-message and effective surrogate who knows his place and will gladly take whatever shit he needs to for the opportunity for power. In fact, I just talked myself into it. Greg Abbott is going to be trump’s pick for veep. And Greg will take it because there’s a good chance trump will croak and it sets him up for the 2028 race.
Why is this being allowed to continue? Without any penalty?
I think Abbott probably is someone the more traditional Republican establishment would like to see. He’s got enough of the hateful public persona to hold Trumps folks but way more disciplined.
I just wonder if Abbott want to actually be on trumps ticket
