Hello, it’s the weekend. This is The Weekender The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will hear a major abortion case Tuesday, the next chapter in a case that the Supreme Court punted last term. In U.S. v. Idaho, Idaho wants its draconian abortion ban to supersede federal emergency room standards, letting the red state…
Frist! I am now (nearly) fulfilled! And, remember Daisy, Lily, Tara, Arnie, Luke, Sophie, Sammy: cats from the past.
At this point, what’s one more drunken rapist?
So you went back in and inserted “(nearly)” after the self-doubt crept in? It’s what we do to ourselves.
(Embarassed, twists toe while turning red).
“The Culture War Commences?”
I’d say it “Continues!”
This just came over the wifi this morning. Please bring this creepy-crawly touchey-feely application to work for the brain worm to your senators’ attention. It’s sad to think that this item alone might draw more attention than RFK being directly responsible for the measles deaths of 85 children, but if it knocks him out of confirmation, it will save countless thousands of lives. This kook will kill more people if we let him.
Transgender people have been part of humanity since its origin, and they will still be here with us when this confederacy of bigots, bullies, and opportunists inevitably devolves back to infighting. Despite the past few presidential elections, I still remain confident that the majority of Americans are disgusted by the tiny, insular coterie of committed transphobes–the self-appointed bathroom police haranguing mostly cisgender women, deadbeat dads shouting over school board meetings, and chauvinists pretending to give a damn about girls’/women’s sports.
(Oh, and damn all the rich, white gays who are okay with the racism, misogyny, and transphobia as long as they get a tax cut. History will NOT be kind to their memories.)
And I’d say you’re 100% correct.
Also continuing is The War on the Poor, but culture wars take up all the oxygen and control the narrative. And our own billionaires and kleptocrats like it that way.
Trans rights and abortion rights are human rights issues. To call them Culture War issues actually downplays their importance. Drag queen story hour is a Culture War issue and, while important, isn’t a life-or-death situation like the others.
The convicted felon boasted that he can end the Ukrainian war immediately after being elected. What is he doing, making the crow pies to take to the table?
He is so busy trying to go through casting call to find the best looking cabinet for the cameras and he is relishing in the infighting going on within the rump team.
Along with going to France with plans to make a big showing to the camera - showing only his left side.
Rethugs have two issues, tax cuts for the rich and culture wars. They scream culture war, culture war, culture war so no one hears about tax cuts for the rich.
Oops, I forgot destruction of the administrative state. They also scream culture war, culture war, culture war so no one pays attention to them undermining the EPA and other agencies that protect our air, water, food etc.
Word of the Day from Elizabeth Mika:
“Pathocracy” - rule of people without conscience;
psychopaths and their ilk;
human predators.
I’ve got a word for the next administration, kleptokakistocracy.
ETA. Wish I could say I made this up but I saw it a couple weeks ago, shortly after the election.
Still zero discussion by TPM staff of the latest culture war explosion - the assassination of the healthcare CEO. This is real, not the astroturf b/s the legacy media are so fond of and here, TPM is all …
ETA: wait no cat?
Graham Cracker forgot to mention that when the accusations are fully public and fully under oath and penalty of perjury, they also generally don’t count:
Thomas: don’t count.
Clinton: biggest crisis in the history of civilization.
Rump: don’t count.
Kavanaugh: don’t count.
Gaetz: don’t count.
Hegseth: don’t count.
A pattern emerges.
Well in Pete H at least can blame his rape/sexual assault on booze, but DonOLD sexually assaulted E Jean Carroll without being inebriated.
And it’s telling that Republicans don’t seem to mind that Pete H is bad with financial management, and little to no management skills personally or professionally.
That would be the new normal. Democrats could make this sound kooky, but after Gaetz, Hegseth, Patel and the rest of the rogues gallery this seems pretty tame. I’m unconvinced that various shibboleths haven’t always been used in hiring practices. It’s how subtle they are, and could the unwashed recognize them.
The silver1 lining may be if those of us not in that particular church can still get vaccines for ourselves and our children. It’s revolting to say this, but a biomedical emergency following that particular vector could eliminate a cluster of dark behaviors and represent the best hope for Homo sapiens as a species.
1 polished tin?
I’d say, that’s all they have.
Total abandonment of Ukraine would not only result in a lot more death and destruction as the Russians move west, but it would likely stoke even more gargantuan refugee flows into Europe. It wouldn’t be pretty. It would constitute an incredible betrayal of a country that, in deed, is fighting for the values that supposedly lie at the core of America’s founding.
I’m not sanguine about US support for Ukraine continuing under Drumpf.
We should all know that Donnie does betrayal – from his wives, from our allies in Syria, from the government of Afghanistan, just to get started.
If it suits his purposes, there’s no reason to think he won’t do it to Ukraine.
And, besides, MAGA’s about turning our back on all that high falutin old school stuff, which is also carte blanche for Dear Leader to do whatever suits his fancy at any particular moment.
