There’s an odd subplot to the story of former President Trump and the National Archives.
It involves National Archives records, it involves Trump, and it involves two of his associates: Kash Patel, the former Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) staffer and transition-era Pentagon official, and John Solomon, the right-wing journalist who played a role in the first Trump impeachment.
The Steele dossier undertook to answer the question “What the hell is going on with Trump and Russia?” The Senate Intelligence Committee found that the FBI investigation gave the Steele dossier “unjustified credence.” But the disintegration of the dossier’s answers has not silenced the power of its question.
It was to silence that question that the outgoing Trump administration appointed a special counsel of its own to investigate its investigators. John Durham has now issued three indictments [none of which] vindicates Trump’s claims in any way. ... It remains fact that Trump’s campaign chairman sought to share proprietary campaign information with a person whom the Senate report identified as a “Russian intelligence officer.” It remains fact that Trump hoped to score a huge payday in Russia even as he ran for president. It remains fact that Trump and those around him lied, and lied, and lied again about their connections to Russia. – David Frum
Patel and Solomon are part of a continuing effort to blow smoke over and spread chaff to obscure and distract from the thrust of the question. That TFG appears still actively interested in that continuation in light of what one might consider more serious legal threats is suggestive.
PS: If it were anyone else the presumption of innocence might be operative but with this individual and frankly those associated with him that presumption would appear ill founded to say the least.
I’m going to identify every single document that they blocked from being declassified at the National Archives and we are going to start putting that information out next week .”
Mendacity! To think that they can cherry-pick one claim or another and unilaterally unclassify documents to mislead the US public after no longer in office?
When your strongest (well, loudest) advocates are John “Kremlin Konduit” Solomon and Kash “Every Bit As Crazy As He Looks” Patel, how can you possibly lose?
So which is it
Trump’s spokesman, Taylor Budowich, also denied The Post’s report, saying that he already has a good legal team.
“President Trump is represented by some of the strongest attorneys in the country, and any suggestion otherwise is only driven by envy,” Budowich said.
I assume NARA means “National Archives Records Administration”… would that be correct? Generally an acronym is explained in articles containing classical journalism which TPM (that would be Talking Points Memo) is noted for.
OK it’s my understanding that classified stuff is not declassified if the document isn’t formally identified as such in a particular required way. A current president might say he or she declassified them any old how, with Brain Power or by virtue of being taken to the residence to be “worked on” or whatever, but if that step of identification isn’t taken it ain’t declassified. And if Patel releases stuff that’s in that state he could get his own ass locked up. That would be my understanding and if I’m wrong please tell me so I can admire Mr. Patel’s fiendish cleverness here.
I have no envy of anything possessed by trump. Not his money, his ego, his palatial Florida estate, his limo his ice cream or that “hamberder” smashed against the wall where it still molders.
At a guess, it is a good bet that the opinions of Bartiromo and Patel about what relevant for the FBI for their investigation, and what they can and can’t see, is utterly irrelevant. More Trumpite lies, false assertions of authority, and impotent demands made to fan outrage and anger.
