Who Can Ruin Their State The Best? - TPM – Talking Points Memo

I’m feeling a little left out as we know the GOP intends to ruin Arizona as well as it does any other State.

While it’s not literally true that Everybody Hates Ted . . . approximately 1 in 10 of Greg Abbott’s 2018 voters saw Ted Cruz’s name on the same ballot and went nope, fuck Ted Cruz.

And in April 2022, feeding off of his own momentum, DeSantis signed the Individual Freedom bill, also known as, The Stop W.O.K.E. Act, effectively banning educators from teaching students critical race theory or any other topic that may force students to feel “guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress” about their race.

When I was in school and we talked about Slavery, and Roots was on the TV, I didn’t feel “guilt” about being white. I felt anguish and distress that slavery was even a thing.
And these same folks that don’t want a real and honest discussion about slavery are sure quick to blame Biden for migrants at the border. I didn’t hear shame or anguish from the right when migrants had their children taken from them.
I’m betting some of these people also hire undocumented migrants for their work. It gives them power over someone else that can’t fight back. And these are the same folks that complain that nobody wants to work in customer service jobs any more.

Go take a look at the state-by-state 2020 election results. Florida and Texas are the second and third bluest red states in the country.

using their gubernatorial powers to get headlines and spark outrage as they prep their national image for possible presidential bids.

There is so much wrong with that.

Conservatism isn’t about freedom.
It’s always about repression.

Ever wonder what living in an autocracy or dictatorship is like? Come to Texas as a non-white male and find out!

I would posit that they have some of the most high-profile, upper-level pols who spew the worst red crap.

The main reason I give credence to your thumb is that I personally know 3 happy liberal couples that have moved to Texas in the past 2 years, for weather, jobs or family. That is neither scientific, statistically significant or otherwise even sensible speculation on my part, but I’m sticking with it.

Abbott and DeSantis remind me of Nixon, Reagan and George Wallace, all diced together and served up with racism sauce and generous handfuls of resentment crumbles. This hating on the poor and powerless is just the same old American populist crap that has been strong in our politics since the country was founded. Long live white male property owners.

Very true. The smart lemmings move away and don’t take the dive.

And so Texas and Florida will experience a brain drain. Disney might just move to another state. That’ll get DeSantis to crow all the more.

I’m rooting for Mutually-Assured Destruction as the end of this fight. Two more repellent human beings I can not imagine.

The flailing-ness of the GOP at the moment is stunning. Biden’s trip to Ukraine is somehow equated with the chemical spill in Ohio. Don’t these people realize that it is precisely the Trump administration’s laxity and the current Supreme Court, that set up the danger. And Kevin McCarthy’s hatred of trains generally, of course.

Without doing any research I’m guessing Iowa is high on the list. We’ve got KKKim Reynolds and a Republican Legislature trying very hard to put us in line with Alabama and Mississippi as far as Education. We are the laboratory for every kooky right wing group willing to spend money on a cause.
