Whitmer Reiterates Demand For Surge In Vaccine Doses Amid Current MI COVID Spike | Talking Points Memo

Amid Michigan facing a new spike in COVID-19 infection rates, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) and Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist (D) on Sunday doubled down on their calls for the Biden administration to distribute more doses to hard-hit states like theirs.

Given the lag between infection and symptoms and the longer lag between vaccination and full protection I am sort of having a hard time understanding how surging vaccine to her state is going to help things overall. I suspect it will just make things harder in states that aren’t having spikes right now.

What about the 360,000 doses allotted to Michigan sitting in cold storage that Whitemore’s admin never ordered? It is hard to know what is failed administration and what is actual need for more vaccines. Certainly, until they have at least exhausted their current allotment, I don’t see a need to send more.

Yup. Whatever is happening today in Michigan is the consequence of actions taken weeks ago, and any possible benefit of vaccination today is 6+ weeks in the future.

As long as the additional doses go to the southern parts of the state and Detroit, where there is density and cooperation, I’m fine with this. Southern states are sitting on surpluses because their citizens don’t want to become socialists. Take the doses away from them.

With ought getting into the politics of why Canada, my province, Ontario, in particular, seems to not doing well in getting vaccinations into arms is clear. The politicians decided, since we don’t have enough for both doses, we would get the first and wait longer for the second. In my case it’s 4 months with 80% protection. The next shot gives us 90%.

That way more people get the first one. So far I haven’t read complaints about that. As expected, there are huge disparities between rich and poor areas. The rich ones are getting it faster because they have more political and economic clout.

You’d think the most important thing short term is for people in hot spots to mitigate the problem the old-fashioned way: masks and distancing. The upswing in vaccines is making people reckless. Just saw a sad story about a Pennsylvania woman who died of covid between her first and second doses.

I like that Biden shut her down on the phone, noting that she is not taking mitigation steps to lock shit down.

Do that, guv, then we can talk about diverting vaccines from places where people are being responsible.

Making a Spring Break exemption to the rules, wherein bad behavior results in cutting the line, would be a horrid precedent to set.

It may be too politically indelicate to mention, but the problem in Michigan is the behavior of too many of its citizens. Even vaccines would have a hard time overcoming that, especially since herd immunity requires about 70% or so to be vaccinated.

Observing Covid-19 over the past 15 months it seems that mobility (due to affluence) and population density were contributing factors initially. But since summer and the Dakotas taking the lead in mortality it seems that another definition of “density” is becoming the major cause of Covid-19 transmission.

(On his way through the Dakotas to the Little Big Horn, Custer told the Dakotans to “play stupid until I get back”.)

I’m skeptical about sending more vaccines to Michigan. However, taking doses away from red states is the best possible way to get them to WANT the vaccine

The State Supreme Court blocked her from doing that.

I don’t really hear ‘demand’ from the Governor. I guess it fits with the picture TPM chose to run, with her pointing her finger in the air, but the article itself doesn’t support that interpretation.

Perhaps in a budgetary move @JoshMarshall is subbing out the headlines to Politico.

This plus a large population of revanchist, open-carry anti-government crazies presents Witmer with problems she cannot adequately overcome which obliges her to call out for support even in areas such as vaccine supply where she doesn’t badly need it. Michigan is under siege by insurrectionists is the crux.

Having been a scientist who did medical research in my career, I could post a boring explanation of IgM and IgG and when they show up and how they work. In the case of the covid vaccines, they are brand new technology. mRNA vaccines. It’s a really cool concept. But it takes 3 weeks to a month after the first inoculation to get to 40% to 80% of an immune reaction. After the second injection another two weeks are needed to get to 90% - 95% immunity. So we are talking 5 - 6 weeks minimum for immunity. But infection after full immunity is still possible. The result would be much much milder symptoms. And no death.
Folks also may not be aware that symptoms of covid show up 3 to 14 days after infection. And some folks have no symptoms at all yet can spread the virus. One other tid bit. Covid is here to stay. It will not “fade away” as donald said. It will dog humanity like the flu only it will be a deadlier disease. I can envision annual vaccination for covid.
Thanks trump
It’s his legacy to humanity. Had we kept the epidemic response office in Wuhan we likely would not even be aware of covid. but trump said of those employees doing very necessary work…" They just stand around and collect their paychecks." He closed 2/3rds of our response offices around the world because they had the taint of “Obama” on them. trump in my opinion is guilty of a major crime against all humanity on the same kind of level that Hitler or Mao or Genghis Khan would be. And yet a large percent of Americans like this man.

And yet, she’s not calling on the legislature to fix things, she’s blaming Biden for not caving to hostage demands.

Lol. What do you believe that would accomplish?
