Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) on Sunday said that the backlash she received from Republicans in her state when she implemented coronavirus restrictions last year informed her opposition to imposing another lockdown, despite the state’s current COVID-19 surge.
It’s a good thing this crop of Republicans, and conservatives at large, weren’t this intransigent during WW2…can you imagine if they acted like this then, and how it would have hurt the war effort? It’s seems unimaginable that a political party would attempt to make it less safe for people to survive in a crisis, and yet that’s what they have been doing…it’s even harder to swallow that they just might have won support instead of being punished for doing so.
There’s a real sickness at the core of the Republican party and conservative thought, one that is intent on destroying the nation and replacing it with an unrecognizable version based on religion and racism. The next decade is really going to determine if America as a beacon of freedom and melting pot survives, or if it dies and is replaced by the second coming of the Confederacy. It’s almost like the issues of the Revolution are headed towards a final confrontation, and who knows how it will turn out.
One of the appalling changes in the GOP over the past 20 years or so, is how they consistently, and almost universally, are willing to put their party’s interests above those of the country on life-and-death issues. There is no such thing anymore as a threat to the country that isso great and fundamental that it won’t be politicized, propagandized, and outright lied about in the interests of the party.
They seriously think they’re ‘owning the libs’ by not getting a jab. However, I take a different view. The ones who get the jab have a much higher survival rate than those who do not. If liberals are protected and conservatives are not, if that means deliberately behaving in manners that will winnow their numbers, then by all means, own away!
Just do us all a big favor, and just hang out together, no need to have anything to do with the rest of us. Because here’s the thing . . . the more you refuse the vaccine, the more the virus concentrates in unprotected populations. Because it goes where there are available hosts. And you are deliberately making yourselves available.
The Republicans’ philosophy is that government is inherently wasteful and inefficient, therefore should not try to solve societal problems. They don’t want the government telling them how to live in general but especially when Democrats or as they see them, Socialists, are in charge.
One reason this philosophy is not good is that it is based on the assumption that people are intelligent and sufficiently informed to make good choices on their own. But we know that 40% or more are not well-informed (especially if they limit themselves to the Right-wing echo chamber) and do not make good choices. And their poor choices result in bad things happening to other people. Gun safety and gun control are prime examples. The vast majority of the people support the concept that guns and ammunition should be sold only to responsible people. But the right-wing cannot abide any new limitations on gun sales.
Ring-wingers are also opposed to the government providing support to the poor partly due to racism because they believe most of the support is minorities,
