Originally published at: White House Tries to Smush Dems’ Backbone With Threats of Mass Firings During Gov’t Shutdown
Democrats are using what little power they have in the Senate as a government shutdown nears to hold the Trump administration to account for some of its abuse of power. Specifically, they are trying to force the executive branch to let the legislative branch do its job, demanding, in exchange for their votes to avert…
Threatening to conduct mass firings of federal workers unless Democrats cave
Make no mistake about it, Republicans put America last.
The kind of widespread reductions in force (RIFs) that they are talking about require an act of Congress. Not to mention “revenge against Democrats” is not what you might call a legit reason for restructuring the federal government.
Coffee giant Starbucks will lay off workers and close stores as part of a $1 billion restructuring plan, CEO Brian Niccol said in a memo to employees on Thursday.
The company will slash 900 employees in non-retail roles across North America, Niccol said. The store closures will amount to a roughly 1% decline in the total number of Starbucks locations in North America in this fiscal year, after accounting for some store openings, Niccol added.
Without coffee government will grind to a halt. That’s why there are 4 Starbucks within 3 blocks of our house. One is in a supermarket. Walk out the door and you see another Starbucks across the street. Never enough caffeine!!!
… … …
It should be painfully obvious that trump’s threat of mass firings in order to stop dems from shutting down the government is a crude and stupid bluff. After all they’re rehiring the workers DOGE fired since realizing shit does not get done without people to do the jobs
EscalatorGate! TeleprompterGate! InvestigateGate! Priorities, folks, priorities!!
We need to pay close attention to what Hegseth is doing, or will try to do, with the senior military leadership.
He is nowhere near as smart or capable, in any dimension, as members of the senior military leadership. In any “normal” circumstances, they would run rings around him, while making him feel as if he is succeeding in his agenda. That said, the fact that he is getting everyone in a room together with him at the same time is worrisome. An empowered bull in the china shop can still do a great deal of damage when he has a reckless, uninformed, and impulsive president behind him.
If Hegseth is as dumb as we give him credit for, and there’s no reason to think he isn’t, this business could become quite loud and messy, and possibly destructive, before it is over.
I think Hegseth’s biggest worry is the idea that a military coup is brewing somewhere among his subordinates and he needs to stomp it out. It’s a drunk, paranoid fantasy. But, he’s drunk and paranoid enough to worry about it.
O/T: I am not a lawyer, but with respect to the rumor that the DOJ is about to indict Donnie’s former FBI director James Comey before the statute of limitations expires, isn’t there a possible silver lining that Comey would be freed to testify to the rampant criminality and stupidity of the then Trump administration? If the charges are flimsy, which it is alleged they are, Comey could sing like a canary with little risk.
I was away all morning (and afternoon), so here it is evening and I want to talk about the topic of the Morning Memo. Might as well do it here. There’s a concept in law called the “presumption of regularity,” which basically gives the gummint the benefit of the doubt in legal proceedings. (The embedded link above is a long and thorough argument on why the Trump DOJ is undeserving of such deference.) I would argue the press tends to treat a presidential administration (and particularly the GOP ones) with the same sort of deference. And it’s quite clear that nothing the Trump administration does is worthy of any sort of extra credibility. In fact, everything that they say or do should be regarded with distrust and suspicion; and until the mainstream media get over their own “traditions” and “rules of style,” we will get the same dysfunctional approach to coverage of the Trump administration’s unceasing deceptions and misdeeds.
Was at maybe the first Starbucks in Seattle in 1991. Not impressed and haven’t been to one since.
Guessing that evil boogeyman Soros is hanging out in a nice villa in a country with no extradition treaty with the US. And some good security.
If the White(s Only) House wants to fire everyone, more power to ‘em. It would have the same effect as a national strike, to which I will say “Thank you, stable geniuses, for nailing your own coffin shut.”
ETA Hmm. If they fire everyone who works for the government, won’t that include themselves?
Arson ??? Where in hell does the glimmer of an idea come from to charge George Soros with arson ?
Note they said anybody who "“works”, which obviously leaves them out of the calculation…
Let’s start a rumor that it wasn’t money in Homan’s Cava bag. It was the Epstein Files.
Broadcast it on the Discovery Channel, 24/7.
They just did it. A Grand Jury Indicted Comey on 2 of 3 charges. It took the former insurance lawyer for Don the Convicted Felon to do it, but the orange dirtbag’s revenge tour has started.
I’ve little love for Comey, his unethical behavior cost Senator Clinton the election in 2016. That said the acting attorney Halligan should think long and hard about what happens to other former lawyers who’ve worked for the Orange POS.
PBS=Public Broadcasting Service
That’d work too.
Shut down until this lawless administration starts following the laws they are breaking and the ones the courts have ordered them to. Otherwise we don’t have a country.
Epstein! Epstein! Epstein! The dotards BFF was Epstein!! That’s priority number one. RELEASE the EPSTEIN FILES!!
