WH, Senators In Talks About Gun Control | Talking Points Memo

President Donald Trump has been in contact with a bipartisan handful of senators recently about gun control policies, the first seemingly meaningful talks on the issue since his presidency began.

It’s good to be king. Republicans get to (try) and play hero.

I remember when the NRA itself said quietly, into its hand, pretty much, that this open carry idea was perhaps unhelpful. And a lot of the gunnies got in this HUGE SNIT and started sending in their NRA cards cut up with scissors and so forth and the NRA backed down. They’ve created a situation where even the most commonsensical gun-control measures, the ones even most gun owners support, cause a huge backlash from the cultists if seriously proposed. If Trump thinks he can buck his base on this and come up a net winner I would be surprised. I think he’ll test the waters, find them decidedly colder than you want for a feet-first plunge, and back away like he never even had any such thought. It wouldn’t be the first time.

Inciter-In-Chief grandstands then later, either he sabotages it because it does not benefit him or NRA will give him another call or some of his R sycophants will get the call and they kibosh any talks.

Let’s NOT forget that for the R’s, it’s god, guns, & greed…AND for the Inciter-In-Chief, anything good for Trump/I/MeMine is all great, never mind the #TrumpBodyCount!

We’ll wait for a further update with absolutely no optimism that these laws will change. We need to flip the Senate and get rid of McConnell.

I guess we can expect a lick and a promise!
So don’t hold your breath that anything of substance will be forthcoming.

If Moscow Mitch isn’t in the room representing the NRA’s interests and agreeing to anything discussed, nothing of any real substance gets done. And that’s not going to happen.

But, Trump will at least put the blame on Manchin, Murphy, and Toomey - especially Murphy and Manchin.

Don’t forget simple incompetence as a contributory factor as well.

They are playing you again. They’re gonna give you assault rifles, because they know the real issue is semiauto firearms. They are on the brink of losing them. Don’t stop now.

I suspected in 2016 that the country would be better off with Rump in the White House and a Democratic Congress, than Hillary with a Republican Congress. Everything I’ve seen confirms it, including this latest gun control circlejerk. The Rump is all about imagining himself the greatest man in history, the singular, transcendent figure who could get this done when Obama and Clinton failed. Except Clinton didn’t really fail, but narcissists are terrible historians.

If the bill reaches his desk, he’ll sign it.

The NRA is laundering Russian money into their coffers. Their ability to lobby Congress is directly aided and abetted by Russian interests. Their very existence in their current financial circumstances is dependent in part on Russian help. Congressional campaign committees have Russian money via the NRA in their accounts.

Yet legislators can say with a straight face the opinions and interests of the NRA and its members deservedly merit consideration when crafting gun laws.

Like the article says, a “fool’s errand.” To think anything substantive would come from this is laughable.

ETA: Taking back the Senate is the only path to gun control.

I look at this ONLY from the prism of the Trump WH feeling negative reactions from El Paso. In terms of substantive action, not many people look at this as anything but noise.

There is zero reason to believe current gun control efforts will vary from past experience. Time will pass, the massacres will fade into the rear view mirror, bigger stories will overtake them. Congress will dither, counting on everyone eventually losing interest.

Rinse and repeat.

Too bad about your dead brother. Do you think the Yankees can make the World Series?

I am going to get myself some Blue Suede Shoes. On my Bucket List. Then drive up to the Bar where Paul LePage is pretending to be a human being to drive him homicidally angry. Used to be my specialty in high school and college, pissing people off.
