White House officials reportedly spent Tuesday morning on the phone with governors trying to explain federal health agencies’ sudden recommendation to pause Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine, which officials were given short notice of, according to CNN.
Is this a danger of blood clots forever, or for a limited time period after the vaccination? Is this something where blood thinners would offer protection?
First, LoL at GOP Govs now being pro-vaccine. After Trump’s statement today, J&J might get the ‘Maga Tough’ designation and be the preferred vaccine of choice!
Second, what Sununu said here is not unreasonable. Based on Fauci’s comments they have their arms around the parameters of this as being similar to the AZ issue (though less frequent). Agree or disagree with the decision, it was technically possible for the CDC/FDA to quickly study the issue, alert the public that this was going under review, and then make a decision to either provide guidance or issue a pause after their meeting (if needed). The preemptive pause does damage the reputation of J&J and that does have an impact on vaccine hesitancy, whether folks want to acknowledge that or not.
Third, Fauci and others hope that the selling point of the high standards of the CDC will help Americans trust the process more. I think that’s debatable.
I think it’s going to be difficult for J&J to be viewed as an equally good vaccine to Pfizer and Moderna in the minds of the public, and the body language of the Biden Administration today was that they’re going to focus on Pfizer/Moderna to meet the targets. The good news is that based on the reactions of these GOP governors, a fair number of folks may be willing to absorb whatever risk there is and get the J&J because they like the ‘one and done’ aspect.
What I heard on the radio was that the J&J shot produced a rare reaction in 6 women. So unless there is some way to figure out commonality of these 6 women do we need to give blood thinners to everyone willing to take the J&J shot?
While I was getting my first Pfizer shot they asked me if I was on a blood thinner. Nope
And because this is not one the mRNA vaccines that need to be kept in at a super cold temp do we know the shelf life of the J&J?
This pause also bounces many thousands of people out of their appointments and sends them back to the end of the line. In my case, that means that instead of being fully protected by the end of April (my J&J appointment was scheduled for tomorrow), I will be getting my first shot of Pfizer on May 13 and won’t be completely protected until almost July (9 more weeks.) Vaccine participation in VT is running close to 80% so all appointments get booked almost immediately and waits are long. When I went to reschedule today, all appointments were at least 5 weeks out.
“Biden’s denying America a microchip vaccine that it doesn’t want for a virus that’s a hoax that Trump spent every day of his presidency saving us from!”
‘Sununu added that the ability of governors to reinstill confidence in vaccines after the J&J news makes it “100 times harder than the pause in the first place,” according to CNN.’
Sununu acts as if he doesn’t know that the political party he belongs to is the main source of the problem he describes. It’s true that such news would have effects on confidence in the vaccine even if the GOP wasn’t deranged and malicious. But it is, and its being so makes it 100 times worse.
For me the risk of dying or serious illness from covid far outweighs the risk of a blood clot. I would rather get the J & J if that was my option. I have a friend who had the option at took the vaccine. I got the two shot Pfizer method. But as I said …if I were offered the J & J and that was my option I would take it.
I feel so sorry for you. When I went today I was 10 minutes early, the line moved fast, I was sent to the waiting room after my jab, and when I checked to see if it had been 15 minutes I realized that if they had stuck to the appointment schedule I still would be waiting in line.
Does VT have Chik-A-Fil? I’m not endorsing them but my set up could have been organized by one of their employees, it ran that fast and so smooth.
It’s J & J not Biden who needs to explain the situation. J & J and its manufacturing partners have been making one wrong move after another. The onus is on them.
Biden just asked Pfizer to step up and they have already pledging to produce more of their vaccine. Republicans would have given J & J another tax incentive to screw up all the more.
