WH: Biden ‘Disappointed’ By Senate Official’s Roadblock To $15 Minimum Wage Increase

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Thursday night that President Joe Biden was let down by a ruling by the Senate parliamentarian that jeopardized the chances of including his proposed minimum wage increase from $7.25 per hour to $15 in the COVID-19 relief package.

Disappointed

Imagine how minimum wage workers feel.

I have seen some strategizing on some work-arounds.

Biden “is disappointed in this outcome” but “respects the parliamentarian’s decision and the Senate’s process,” Psaki said in a statement.
“He will work with leaders in Congress to determine the best path forward because no one in this country should work full time and live in poverty,” she continued.

Perhaps someone should note that adults deal with their reversals differently than, cough, cough, er, some recent examples.
It models behavior in a democrat society rather than one run by autocratic intimidation.
I suppose it implies the question of, Which one would you rather live in?

Disappointing.

At some point Harris is going to have to overturn the parliamentarian to kill the filibuster.

including items in a reconciliation bill that do not directly affect the budget.

I wonder how congress budgets? When I budget I have to look at all that comes in and all that goes out. If you increase the minimum wage, how on earth does that NOT affect the income? Federal Income tax and FICA would both have to go up

Not sure how he was let down by the ruling after he pretty much predicted it himself!

Anyway, there are ways around the Parliamentarian if Senate Democrats want to go that far; or the legislation could even be re-written to fall more closely within existing rules.

We’ll see what they decide to do, bearing in mind that Manchin and Sinema have already announced their opposition to the minimum-wage proposal itself (as written).

Need to make it the Fight for 20. At a minimum.

Been at this so long that 15 ain’t getting what it used to.

Hopefully they can get it through one way or another. If not, the minimum wage needs to become a major campaign issue in 2022. I don’t know for sure, but I expect the voting rate for individuals working for minimum wage is low. This could be a means to get them registered to vote and vote Dem.

And you thought Reagan and Trump were the only actor presidents. This was Joe’s way to save face while still removing the roadblock to the ARP passing.

Crass? No. He’s doing what’s right for the country; he’s just sly about how.

Raising the MW to $15 or more will create jobs when people working 3 jobs just to get by are able to cut back to 2.

Take it as gospel- the failure to take real control of government and move a pro-working class agenda forward is going to hurt us badly with the base; our constiuents and embolden the republicans, imperiling everything by the mid terms.

This is the very weakness which the Democratic Party is accused of that invites what occurred January 6th.

This could be useful, Democrats can keep campaigning on the $15 minimum.

How so? We control all three branches- for the working person this looks like political weakness and a lack of commitment to the idea.

Ah, so we’ve already entered the phase of the cycle of governance where Dems can’t pass a single liberal idea. I look forward to the inevitable several years where Dems have to govern like 1980s republicans only then for the poor to get frustrated their lives don’t improve and vote GOP in the midterm when somehow with a one person majority the GOP can pass the most extreme right wing agenda. Gawd I hate this carousel.

He’s disappointed? That an unelected official heading an archaic office has any say is as bad as having McEvil McYertle running the damn country.

Screw that! Add the $15 minimum wage, which is supported by nearly 2/3 of the country, to the bill anyway and let the Rethugs whine.

Droll.

Ummmm… Dude? It’s been just over a month into Biden’s presidency.

One parliamentary ruling about one minor part of one single bill and you’re ready to throw in the towel? Seriously?

For whatever reason, Manchin and Sinema dislike the $15 hourly minimum.

If we let them get away with whatever game it is they’re playing, they will get away with it.

According to the GOP Biden’s first 100 days are a failure. :grinning:
