War In Europe: Scope Of Russian Invasion Emerges At Daylight | Talking Points Memo

Must have. A Russian helicopter was hot down last night and they’re sitting ducks if anywhere near a competent Stinger guy.

"In fact, Trump had privately indicated that he would seek to withdraw from NATO and to blow up the U.S. alliance with South Korea, should he win reelection… “Yeah, the second term,” Trump had said. “We’ll do it in the second term.” https://washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/

Giving weapons freely sounds disastrous, but what do I know. .

If he attacks the Baltic NATO countries he would drag in every other NATO country because that’s what the alliance is, a mutual defense pact. It would be a declaration of war against countries like the US, the UK, France, and Germany with modern air forces, not the antiquated Soviet hardware the Ukrainians have that make them a relatively soft target.

It would make Moscow and military bases within Russia legitimate targets in a conventional war. He’s not going to risk that. He’s not insane, and he’s not stupid.

Lots of misinformation, some unintentional. Again from the Beeb.

Soon after President Putin declared the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, videos and images claiming to be from the conflict began trending on major social networks.

While there is lots of genuine footage, some viral clips racking up hundreds of thousands of views show events from past conflicts or old military exercises. Many of these seem to coming from users posting content without checking.

The BBC has seen videos of the 2014 Russia-Ukraine war, the 2011 Libyan war and the 2020 Beirut explosions going viral.

In one example, a former Ukrainian ambassador to the US tweeted a video which he claimed was taken in Mariupol, but a version of the same clip was uploaded to TikTok weeks ago and apparently showing a lightning hitting a power station.

Another viral video claiming to show Russian military paratroopers landing in Ukraine first appeared online in 2016.

But Twitter seems to be taking a proactive role in confronting misleading content, as it seemed to have removed several videos proven to be old or false by fact-checkers and researchers.

Needless to say, always be skeptical.

I actually read that as deference at first. Seemed more appropriate.

Don’t be too sure. Just a couple months ago, no one thought he’d invade the Ukraine. He told us in 2007 what he wanted to do:

He’s as good as any of them at weaseling to the next unprovable fantastic tale. None of us have ever lived that way. So we really just don’t understand their mindset.

Imagine being able to take the easy way in everything. Your thinking, your character, your spirituality, the physical world you live in, and how you spin the fabric of your daily existence or make up stories about your enemy. You only have one task, and that is to keep moving your goalposts and concocting a way to keep justifying your attack on a sane group.

They don’t have a single constraint on them. No fact, no natural law, no principle of physics needs to be observed. No punishment for the most grievous transgressions. Imagine having that be your ‘work’ and/or worldview.

“Giving weapons freely”
We’ve seen how badly that goes here in The States.

I’m very sure he’s not going to declare war against the United States and the NATO alliance.

Well said. And he is hated by 60+% of this Nation.

Who were the Republican members of Congress who’ve been schmoozing with Putin, going so far as to visit the Kremlin and even posing with Putin for photos at a grand dinner gala? Can they now be charged with aiding and abetting the enemy, thus stripping them from office? We need to make it crystal clear that the Republican Party is now, and has been for quite some time, complicit in setting the stage for what we’re seeing now in Ukraine.
