Republican Sen. Mitt Romney (UT) sharply rebuked President Donald Trump on Thursday night calling the one-term President’s efforts to overturn his election loss in Michigan “undemocratic.”
Mitt, while your comments are true and appreciated, they are far too tepid. Can you muster up a bit of passion and emotion and righteous anger to make your case more forcefully? Trump and his minions don’t understand logic. You need to be pissed off!!! The fate of the nation is at stake!!! Damn it!!!
Before everyone jumps on Mitt, if we’re going to criticize Republicans for slavish allegiance to Trump-as we absolutely should-then we should support those who are taking a stand in favor of respecting the will of the voters. So, I salute Mitt here along with other like the Georgia Sec. of State.
Its going to be interesting to see what colors Romney flies in the next Congress. Because, given how tight the margin will be in the Senate, a couple of republicans willing to cross aisle could carry a LOT of weight.
But, without Trump as the villain, I suspect Romney will have little issue with McConnell continuing to tear down democracy.
“President Trump responded to Romney’s statement early Friday with predictable name-calling, referring to the lawmaker in a tweet as a “RINO,” Republican in name only.”
We have to admit that the right excels at one thing: messaging. Romney (and the country) might be well served by pushing back on the label “RINO”. He could point out that the Republican party used to stand for character, honesty, and being willing to take a stand for what you believe. (Not since Lincoln, but still…) He could point out that those who want to dismantle the country because they don’t want to accept the will of the people are actually aiding the enemies of the country. He needs to shine a light on the rest of the GOP who have simply rolled over and allowed Trump to prevail, hoping that they can climb to the top of the wreckage after he’s gone.
I realize that he doesn’t have the integrity or courage to do this. None of them do. But Romney is in a unique position here. He has already destroyed in any chance at another national run. He is probably in one of the safest positions in the Senate. He could do this and have a life afterwards.
Uh-oh…someone’s going to be riding shotgun after this, except I don’t think its going to be Mittens this time.
Mittens may spend some time in the doghouse with his party but in the long run, history will look kindly on him for standing up to a tyrant. Finally, some gooper says something that makes some kind of sense. Please clap.
I totally agree. We can’t on one hand demand that they stand up and speak out against him. And then on the other hand criticize them for doing the very thing we wanted them to do. As far as passion goes, this is Mitt Romney who is quite possibly the most wooden pol in the country. This IS him being passionate.
As a scientist, I take this as a personal insult. The scientists who worked tirelessly on the vaccine didn’t do it for or because of Trump. They will hopefully get the Nobel Prize, unlike the Ignoble Prize that Trump deserves.
Now if we want to name a cemetery for Covid victims who died needlessly, that I could see. “Uncle George lies in the Trump”. But better yet, let’s name all respiratory illnesses after him. “Sorry, Janey can’t go to school today, she has a case of the Trump.”
I guess Geraldo is trying to save Trump from the unfortunate “Santorum” incident.
But seriously, when Geraldo has accepted that Trump has been defeated, that is quite the signal of a total and abject defeat.
I totally agree with you about the insult to scientists. The right has been demeaning science for so long that they don’t even realize the magnitude of the achievement that they are insulting.
I appreciate some of these Republicans stepping up, but I want to know when they begin calling out their compatriots in the Senate. If the entire Republican Party was taking a stand, or at least an influential part of it, including some Trumpists, it would calm things down and help shut Trump up. But they just won’t do it.
How dare they claim they are the patriots?
