Apparently White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci isn’t on the chopping block, despite President Donald Trump retweeting a post calling for the doctor’s firing.
Near the start of Today’s briefing, at the end of Fauci’s first go at the podium (3:02:57 in video below) is a remarkable moment. Asked if he is “doing this voluntarily” (i.e., throwing himself under the bus for Trump), his mouth says “yes” but he shakes his head “no”. The head movement gives the honest answer. We are living in a mad pantomime in a pandemic.
The people arround Trump know the markets will tank, and Trump will cause himself immense political pain if he cans Fauci…
that message will work for a few days…
Then the hangers on and grifters in the FOX news/OANN bubble will start to work on him, feeling they need to control him. That and some of the dumb-ass wanna be CEOs will talk about the economy being the key to his reelection. They will redirect his anger to Fauci…
Fauci will go. And it will be a good thing. Will free him to talk. Will make it clear to every republican who has any political sense that Trump is leading a mentally deranged death cult. And best of all - firing Fouci will be something that will impact 5% or so of the electorate who are giving Trump the benefit of the doubt. Will be the start of losing in a landslide.
Oh c’mon…this is just more of the passive/aggressive BS that Trump regularly engages in. ‘Maybe, maybe not. MANY people think… Oh damn the media for ‘speculating’. I am SUCH a victim…’ FFS.
Whoever writes the post headlines appears to be aware of that old baseball tradition–the “vote of confidence” by management for a manager under fire was inevitably regarded as the kiss of death.
When has that ever stopped him? He also can’t fire an IG without cause and a 30 day warning to Congress. Laws only stop behavior if there are consequences for breaking them. Republicans have shown Trump that nothing will happen.
I don’t think Trump can fire Dr. Fauci. He’s simply too popular with the public for that move to be seen as anything but purely political for Dr. Fauci not kissing Trump’s ring like everyone else.
But Dr. Fauci is already co-opted so Trump is probably just pulling his leash. The TRUTH of the matter is that Trump and Dr. Fauci both share some blame for the slow response to COVID-19, lack of testing, downplaying it in public, etc. Their motives were somewhat different but Trump knows how to play that in PR and Dr. Fauci doesn’t. So he won’t directly call out Trump unless pressed, and will immediately defend Trump’s approach whenever he has to (as he did on Sunday) even though he knows the TRUTH: Trump didn’t WANT the unvarnished truth of COVID-19 in January and February, either told to his face or to the public. So Dr. Faui and others tried to soften it to get Trump to do as much as possible, and by doing so give Trump the perfect basis to spread the blame away from himself.
Today’s update/presser might be unusually unhinged; if the press asks the right questions that is. Being a career civil servant, Trump can’t fire him, but he could send him back to Allegies and Infectious Diseases and then get Dr. Oz as Covid-19 “celebrity spokesperson”.
