^^ that is interesting. Perhaps the GOP is hoping that Dem-led lawsuits along those lines will serve to alienate Latinos and South Americans from liberals.
Otherwise, this about-face seems way too transparent for anyone to buy it. I get vertigo trying to imagine how the hatemongers on Fox will try to parse this obviously cynical hypocrisy.
I have no doubt political consultants are prepared to deliver this level of sophistry, but it’s really going to wreak havoc on the already-feeble reasoning capabilities of the Fox audience. Think “metal fatigue” but mental: like when you bend a metal paperclip repeatedly until it falls apart.
The political cynicism in this strategy is astounding. He doesn’t care about these people, only in the symbolic cache of ‘helping’ some brown folks. Mark down Rubio, Scott and DeSantis as equal in the moral bankruptcy department.
The way Dems can counteract this is appealing to the Puerto Rican electorate in Florida reminding them (though I don’t think it would require much recall) of Trump’s shameful behavior to islanders after the hurricane, the paper towel humiliation.
This is pretty funny. Venezuelans can’t vote. Trump must think that everyone who is Hispanic is the same.
I guess he thinks that all Latins know each other.
Isn’t borrowing and/or temporarily granting U.S. citizenship to Venezuelans for the sole purpose to purchase republican votes the definition of Voter Fraud ?
Just wow! I wonder how many Venezuelans are being held in indefinite detention in overcrowded, under-resourced facilities, separated from their kids/parents facing the risk of the spread of infectious diseases just to make this abortion of a president look strong?
Latinos with money are like a lot of people with money, they vote Republican.
Many Latinos - in the US - do not trust a woman to lead them.
Twenty nine percent of the Latino vote went to Trump in 2016 for these reasons That is significant.
The big mystery of recent years is why there hasn’t been an outpouring of Puerto Rican voters for the Democrats in Florida
If I can offer up my opinion: many of the newly arrived Puerto Ricans to FL have a very different idea of politics than older generations of “Nuyoricans.” (Hopefully, some of them on this blog might chime in on this). From what I’ve seen it’s a combination of differences in social status, economics and religious views. I also understand that the older generation of Cubans are less likely to be rabidly Rethug. However, the idea of courting newly arrived Venezuelans seems really off the mark.
ETA: When I reference Nuyoricans, I’m also referencing Dominicans as well.
I know that the Latino - Hispanic vote isn’t a monolith but it’s the Latino - Hispanic plurality in the Texas demographic that is driving the momentum that is turning Texas back into a Democratic state.
Minister of Agriculture in the northern Bahamas has ocean water lapping against his windows that are 20 feet off the ground. It was posted on twitter and I don’t know how to copy it since I’m not a tweeter, but if that is the case with him, what about low lying houses? There won’t be anything left.
That was my first thought, but I could see the right wing justices drawing a distinction between immigrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America and Mexico and “immigrants who come from nations that are devastated by war or natural disasters.”
Trump is just following the law. After all, the program is called Temporary Protected Status. Any correlation between the termination of protected status and the election is purely coincidental.
