President Donald Trump has a new idea to win over Hispanic voters in Florida in time for the 2020 election.
Now how the heck are Trump supporters supposed to distinguish between “good” brown people and “bad” brown people, when they’ve been told they’re all rapists, criminals, and drug runners?
And doesn’t Florida also have a sizable Puerto-Rican population? Was that a bridge too far for his racism to cross?
Trump’s cynicism knows no bounds.
Sickening.
And boundless.
What’s the play? Register all those Venezuelans with TPS to vote? That would be sorta illegal, wouldn’t it? Meanwhile, the Puerto Ricans you constantly insult are US citizens, stable genius.
Well, see, once we deport all the children with life-threatening diseases we’ll obviously have a lot of room freed up and as it happens we’ve got these Venezuelans hanging out that we kind of need to win Florida so it’s cake and eat it—they’re monstrously cruel to immigrants and also nice to them sometimes when it’s expedient. Anyone who finds that cynical can be reminded that if they lose Florida there won’t be anyone beating up on immigrants at all. Is that what they want? Well is it?
According to a Politico report Monday, Trump is considering shielding Venezuelan immigrants from deportation after Florida leaders ensured him that the move would help him win the battleground state of Florida in 2020.
Venezuelans should think long and hard about voting for Trump. Any respite from deportation is unlikely to last too far past Election Day 2020. Once he doesn’t need them, it’s over for them, judging by his track record.
Politico reported that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have spoken directly to Trump about the issue. Scott added that he had spoken to acting director of Citizenship and Immigration Services Ken Cuccinelli and one of the President’s top advisers on immigration.
However, Rubio and Scott denied that political considerations have entered any discussions regarding the potential Venezuelan protections.
Well…looking at this, we at least know that several aforementioned individuals do not believe in the existence of hell.
So he’s run out of white votes? Has to pander to non-whites? Sad! How “impure” that is!
Shameless. Is there no low road Agent Orange won’t take?
So he still thinks he has a shot at latinx votes after the crap he’s pulled with this group? He’s truly off in his own world.
You just knew this was coming.
Venezuela has always reminded him of Normay.
Oh, I see, now he likes some brown people. It is hard to keep up with the ever changing landscape and maybe he thinks Venezuela will pay for wall on the border, didn’t work with Mexico.
You should have added, “Well, Donnie, do ya feel lucky, punk?”
All the opposition has to do is run with the quotes he and his surrogates have made in the last two years. Remind the voters of the dialogue with Puerto Rico. Remind the voters of the caged children, who just happen to be brown.
I don’t want these issues to NOT be a part of this presidential campaign. These attitudes cannot be part of the American psyche for one more day, one more minute. The next President is going to have a horrible time turning this around.
A member of my church congregation is in her second year teaching in the UAE. She noted in her blog post this week about the shootings in Texas and reminded us all that the whole world is watching.
We have a lot of repair work to do, but it can’t start without the drumbeat reminder of what we’ve become in this administration. The campaign has to be about how we repair all this damage.
It sounds like the GOP is assuming the descendants of Cuban refugees have more sympathy for refugees from Venezuela than they do for people from Puerto Rico or immigrants and their children from elsewhere in Central and South America.
Do Republicans honestly think allowing Venezuelan refugees to stay in America will outweigh their locking up of immigrants and their children in the minds of the Cuban community?
What this story does is breathtaking to me.
To be honest, the crass, opportunistic cynicism took me by surprise. And this is after four years of exposure to Trump on the political stage.
Since I am a glass-half-full person, I quite naturally have an optimistic take on Trump’s strategy here:
It signals abject fright and desperation on the part of Donald Trump
Allow Venezuelans in for any obviously cynical reason the admin puts out and they take their chances of being killed in a mass shooting in Florida. Shouldn’t do the first without working to stop the second eventuality.
And here I thought Venezuela was just another one of those shithole countries that Trump hated. But as it turns out, the Electoral College manages to convince the POSOTUS that sometimes there’s a benefit to living up to American ideals.
