Threaten countries with retribution just because they warn their citizens to be careful visiting the country with the highest gun violence in the developed world.
(As most of you know, I live and work in Europe. When I travel to the States for business, I often get travel warnings from our corporate travel agent… This, my friends, is how the rest of the world sees us now…)
“I think meaningful background checks are a real positive, politically I can’t tell you, I don’t know, good, bad or indifferent,” Trump added later on. “I don’t care politically. I don’t want to have crazy people having guns.”
Look, the NRA has over the years taken a very, very tough stance on everything and I understand it.
Trump has three adjectives: tough, strong, and huge. Occasionally, tremendous, meaningful, and beautiful. Where you and I would use others, he gropes for one that’s as close as he can get with his limited set. And that’s why he sounds like a 4th-grader who hasn’t done the homework and is trying to impress the teachers when he’s talking.
As Trump mentioned it is indeed a slippery slope. If they (NRA) give some ground here it could be a sign of weakness. And given the weak position they are in now they could lose everything by losing the stranglehold they have over the GOP.
But if the NRA does hold their ground Trump can not afford to actually start losing senate support.
Jeez, Trump is sealing the deal as he speaks. And they are really, really afraid of what has happened. His response shows no footing, just flopping around, trying to ward it off.
In one week, their image has been locked in so hard that the branding iron has gone all the way through.
“I understand it. It’s a slippery slope. They think you prove one thing and that leads to a lot of bad, I don’t agree with that. I think we can do meaningful …”
Now, who can argue with that?
But TPM has a banner headline…on…wait for it…”Biden Gaffes”.
