President Trump will hold a Rose Garden press conference about the census citizenship question Thursday, where he is expected to unveil a executive action on the issue, CNN reported.
Not sure how this is going to work in practice. Can a president really overrule the Supreme Court with an executive action? My brain says, “no, of course not,” but the sick feeling in my stomach says, “we’re about to find out…”
My money is on the slow walk. But we’ll see what happens. It would be nice if it all came to a head within the next week or two - instead of ‘after the elections’.
'member when Obama defied the Supreme Court and issued an EO to get around their ruling, and Hannity’s head exploded in a volcano of mashed potatoes? Good times…
I have that deep fear as well, that Roberts will say, “You need a better reason to get the question added… Oh, Trump demands it? Ok, that’s a good enough reason.”
You know he’s not holding a press conference to announce the citizenship question won’t be on the survey. He just wants another opportunity to blather on and on and throw another monkey wrench into the government.
No. There are administrative procedures he’d have to go through to even consider adding a citizenship question without a court decision allowing it. He can’t just change the rules in the middle of a process, especially one that is already underway. That’s my take but I’m just some peon out here in the hinterlands opining for peanuts.
If he does this, Nancy would have been prescient: he will impeach himself. Rat’s Ass Bastard defying SCOTUS should be good enough for even the centrists to formalize impeachment proceedings.
What if citizens collectively decided to boycott filling out the census if Trump issues an extrajudicial EO? Is there a certain threshold of respondents necessary to make the census valid?
Sure there are rules that ‘forbid’ it. But honestly - so far - they’re playing the ‘agile development’ game. Make a move - and wait for it to work it’s way through the courts.
