Some time ago, I allowed my mind to wander into the possibility of the military brass being the last resort to put an end to this insanity. Didn’t stay there long, as it really wasn’t something ripe for contemplation. Now? Not so sure that they won’t be our last hope.

I think this was a huge mistake by tRump and Hegseth. Forcing top brass all into one space to hear a combination of paranoid ramblings and delusions of grandeur may well backfire on them. These are high level career military officers, they may well get to talking quietly amongst themselves….

Who are the other Dems likely to get wobbly on the continuing resolution? GOP only needs to pick up 5 votes.
And as others here have observed the best outcome might be for the Republicans to finally kill the filibuster. If that comes up for a vote the Democrats should join.

Whiskey Pete Kegseth seems unaware that many, many jobs in the military don’t require big, muscly, violent “warriors.” The number of support staff, logistics, computers, mechanics, electronics, endless paperwork, etc. is mind boggling.
And why should a swivel chair pilot who steers the drone from 2,000 miles away in a nice air conditioned office need to be able to lug a 120# pack up and down mountains all day, do 100 pull ups and 500 push ups, and run a mile in under 5:30 in combat boots before they’re allowed to touch a joystick?
Incredibly, this is the 21st century. Trump wants the 1800s back and Heggie longs for the days of Conan the Barbarian.

Trump getting NO applause when he came in or walked out was the headline. Of course, every other POTUS knows that the tradition of the military being scrupulously apolitical goes back to the beginning of the Republic - the Joint Chiefs never applaud at the State of the Union. Trump apparently never noticed that or understood it and it really threw him for a loop.
This is a good sign. These 0-7 guys must NOW realize that Trump is a real loon and that they need to be on guard for illegal orders from both Trump and Hegseth. The DoD maybe our last best chance to save the Constitution from Trump and the GOP.

The GOP has thrown average Americans under the RV. Russell Vought.
But we didn’t have to be here. SCOTUS embraced unitary executive theory, giving us an executive that is untouchable and out of control. It even plans to go to war on urban populations within the country. In a way, this is all very silly. The US is a wealthy country that could readily provide universal healthcare, good education and house everybody. Instead the net worth of half the population is less than $1, and about 15 million Americans face precarity. The public sector exists because there are functions where it is more efficient and safe to provide certain goods and services as public goods and services. That works out to a roughly 40-60 split, with the private sector dominating. Moreover, that costs money, so there needs to be taxation to fund production of public goods and services. Certainly it is appropriate to challenge how taxes are spent, but just creating more debt and destroying institutions is foolish and wasteful.
