Trump Taps Retired Navy Admiral As New DNI

Just after President Donald Trump forced the retirement of Sue Gordan, a three-decade career official whom he deemed too close to former DNI Dan Coats, the President announced Thursday his pending nomination of retired Navy Admiral Joseph Maguire as the new DNI.

I DO NOT WANT “At least he is more reasonable than Ratcliffe”. I want Hearings. And action dealing with the law.

”Though Maguire has not come up in the intelligence community, he is seen as at least a more reasonable choice than Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX)“

That is, until he got associated with ttump. ETTD.

“Mr. Current Occupant, she is just heartbroken at being asked to step down and not having the opportunity to continue serving our country well.”
“Good. I win. Get her out of there.”

If that’s his position as Acting DNI, he won’t be acting for very long.

Acting DNI.

Although I can see why the writer was confused.

Yeah. Someone had a Trump stenographer, I think the one who organized Sarah Huckleberry’s farewell party, who posited that Trump likes acting Cabinet Secretaries because they’re more flexible & easier to fire. Not to mention they don’t have to go through Senate confirmation.

Exactly who we want in the most sensitive positions; in this case, a fly by night Intel Director.

By forcing someone to step away and then putting in someone else, Trump exercises power. Exercising power feeds his self esteem, and his self esteem requires feeding because this is food that keeps him going. Otherwise, he’d be completely indolent, with nothing to do. Why be indolent, when there’s power to exercise?

Rome didn’t hear much from the Carthaginians after they did that to them!

Not clear the Romans actually did that in Carthage – but we should do it to this Administration!

Donald Trump is gutting our country’s ability to defend itself from foreign nations. He is systematically eliminating any and all of those in our intelligence and diplomatic communities who might actually serve country over him. He is replacing those he removes with people who will do his bidding regardless of its legality. He is doing the bidding of those who would see us fail as a nation.

From Trump’s tweet: ". . . the Honorable Joseph Maguire . . . " Maguire is a retired Admiral, not a retired judge or other position that requires the word “Honorable” before it. What a dumbass.

Towards the end of the Punic Wars. IIRC, it was their response to Hannibal bringing the elephants over and using them as armored cavalry. After 120+ years of war, the Romans were pretty fed up with their enemies.

Two immediate reactions:

1: Groucho Marx…I wouldn’t want to be a member of any organization that would have me as a member. (Everything Trump touches dies)

2: When you look at the systematic gutting of seasoned and experienced career professionals in the FBI and intelligence community, and the efforts to shatter our alliances in Asia and Europe, it is hard to avoid the impression that Trump has been working on a shopping list and the person who drew up that list has the initials VP

Thanks. I know the story; I just don’t think it’s necessarily factual (the salt part).

Two relevant articles from Classical Philology:

“To be Taken with a Pinch of Salt: The Destruction of Carthage,” by Ron Ridley (Univ. of Melbourne), 1986.

and

“A Legend of the Destruction of Carthage,” Sue Stevens (Randolph), 1986.

These are from memory; if you want proper cites I can fetch them.
