Trump Says He ‘Never Even Thought Of’ Delaying The 2020 Election

One would think they’d decline!

But who predicted that he will try, let alone succeed?

Yes, saw this, was expanding on it :slightly_smiling_face:

True, but that’s because it’s the only thing he’s got to run on and sees it as a gauge on his presidency. Plus, in his warped little mind, the economy, money is all that really matters anyway. He’d sacrifice even daughter-wife for a dollar.

McConnell is your truffle pig. He’ll keep snuffling Trump’s bottom as long as there’s an unfilled opening in the federal judiciary.

And Trump lacks the power to control state elections.

Well, in a way, Republicans have nothing but “magic.”

Again, lets be clear…

The President has no ability to cancel elections, His or anybody else’s. Even a declaration of martial law doesn’t give him the power to cancel elections…Lincoln basically did that, along with numerous other extraordinary acts, and we still held elections.

Nor do republicans have the clear majority in both Houses (they are a very minority in the House) that would be necessary to even contemplate an emergency legislative delay. (and even if they did, that would be fast-tracked into the Courts for many obvious reasons)

And as I pointed out, pressuring GOP governors to delay elections and appoint republicans, still loses them the Senate, and would result in losing them pretty much every governorship that agreed to such actions.

Kinda hard to “BothSides” this…ain’t it?

But now that you mention it…

Exactly, and in all but a couple of must win states for Dems, the governor is a Democrat or a Republican who is at least sane enough to recognize what a disaster it would be to cancel their elections.

First of all according to the Constitution he cannot not call off the election Also, according to the Constitution his reign of terror ends on January 20, 2021.
twentiethamendmentsection1
The Twentieth Amendment ( Amendment XX ) to the United States Constitution
Section 1.** The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January**, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin.

If there is no new President in place by election than the I believe the Speaker of the House becomes President. According to the constitution, the President -Elect becomes President as of noon on the 20th. Remember when people freaked out when Justice Roberts read the oath of office incorrectly to President Obama? It didn’t matter because according to the Constitution he became President at 12 o’clock. The oath and inauguration are just formalities.

Given the GOP’s fanatical lust for power, coupled with the SCOTUS’s willingness to kow-tow to the F*cknut-in-Chief, I give it better than 50/50 odds that this exactly what McConnell tries to do.

It seems just about every day someone talks about mid-summer, fall, today read sometime late 2021. In my state (TN) they are planning a limited reopening on May 1st, then every 28 days open a little more, that makes it sometime in the summer and this is a red state. What is very clear is that you are correct no magic will make this disappear.

They can’t. The House would never even consider such legislation. It would be DOA, even if by some miracle, McConnell could get it passed in the Senate…which I am extremely skeptical that he could do.

SCOTUS is powerless in such a situation, because there is no law to rule upon. Its just lot of hot air and a bill in the Senate. Until any bill is passed by BOTH the House and the Senate, and signed by the President, SCOTUS are merely onlookers like the rest of us.

The concern of course, is the other shoe that is inevitably going to drop. Which is, the economic depression that is going to come riding down hard on the entire globe. There is not going to be some “jump start” that is going to hold that off.

In fact, I am pretty sure we are going to be dealing with BOTH a pandemic and a Depression. Sadly, Biden is going to be going into the WH looking wistfully back on going into the WH in 2009 as the “good times”.
