I remember when I was a kid hearing my grandfather talk about MLK. This would have been maybe five years after King’s death. He said King would come to town “and get them all stirred up and then leave town” with riots to follow (I do not think it is true that riots followed King appearances, it was just what he said) It was King’s words, he insisted, that caused civil unrest. Not segregation, denial of voting rights, beatings and murders. It is no different than today when people suggest Maxine’s words are the problem.

This is the same McCarthy who initially said Trump “bears responsibility” for the invasion of the Capitol by supporters on January 6 but then later traveled to pay homage to the ex-President at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. He also tried to reinvent history by saying he didn’t back the former President’s attempt to overthrow a democratic election on the basis of flagrant lies about fraud and he has put Trump at the center of his midterm election campaign.
McCarthy has also resisted punishing Rep. Mo Brooks from Alabama for his exhortation to Trump supporters on January 6 that “today is the day American patriots start taking down names and kicking ass.” While some Republicans wanted Brooks reprimanded, McCarthy demurred.

In an exclusive interview with theGrio , Waters dismissed suggestions that she was encouraging violence. “ I am nonviolent,” she said. The congresswoman said attempts to characterize her words and suggest otherwise is nothing more than a political tactic by the GOP.
“Republicans will jump on any word, any line and try to make it fit their message and their cause for denouncing us and denying us, basically calling us violent … any time they see an opportunity to seize on a word, so they do it and they send a message to all of the white supremacists, the KKK, the Oath Keepers, the [Proud] Boys and all of that, how this is a time for [Republicans] to raise money on [Democrats] backs,” Waters added.
Further clarifying her comments on being “confrontational,” the California congresswoman said “I talk about confronting the justice system, confronting the policing that’s going on, I’m talking about speaking up. I’m talking about legislation. I’m talking about elected officials doing what needs to be done to control their budgets and to pass legislation.”
The House minority whip then pointed to remarks issued by the judge overseeing former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin’s trial in the death of George Floyd, who suggested that Waters’ comments could be grounds for appealing a verdict in the trial.
The judge also said the jury had been instructed not to watch the news and therefore Waters’ comments could not prejudice the jury and warrant a mistrial, that “a congresswoman’s opinion really doesn’t matter a whole lot,” and rejected a motion from the defense to use her rhetoric as grounds for a mistrial.

No. Legally unwise and a total setup was Tim Pawlenty’s appointee white nationalist GOPer judge failing to sequester the jury, and he did it on purpose to make a fucking disaster out of all of it while Faux News went desperately apeshit trying to paint the trial as unfair and a show trial to cause violence from the KKKult if he was convicted and ongoing inner city unrest threatened to create an excuse for a mistrial on the theory that the jury would convict to avoid riots. THE JUDGE DID THIS ON PURPOSE. HANDS DOWN. NO RESPONSIBLE JUDGE IN THIS SITUATION WOULD FAIL TO SEQUESTER THE JURY. He planned for this. The Appeals c0ourt already overruled him once on this case, forcing him to accept the 3rd Degree Murder charge. His revenge is fucking the trial up to get the guy off. His little quip to the defense counsel that he believes that jury is obeying his order to not watch8 the news is buillshit…he knows damn well that’s not happening with all of them…and when one or two of them get word that maybe it should be a mistrial, well, maybe he should be “innocent” at that point, huh?
I really have no respect for4 this judge’s whining that he wishes politicians would stop disrespecting the judicial process and blah blah blah. Her should’ve sequestered the jury from the get-go and he knows it. The jury was sequestered for the OJ trial for precisely the same reasons. Riots ALREADY happened country-wide because of Floyd’s death. The strife, including politicized messaging, was ongoing when this jury was being selected. Sequestration was the only thing that made any goddamn sense.
Your grandfather simply forgot the intermediate step of the water cannons, dogs, and police violence sandwiched between MLK speaking and the riots.
Anything is better than talking about how many house members were in on the insurrection, rampant gun violence, or the sorry state of Matt Gaetz, amiright?

If he meant “peaceful” then why was he gleeful while he watched the violence unfold? And why did he then wait hours to make another plea for peace?

That quick probably means it’s either guilty because it was so fucking obvious or someone hung the jury and told them outright he/she wouldn’t budge.
