Trump Pledges To Nominate A Woman Next Week To Fill Ginsburg Seat | Talking Points Memo

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is promising to put forth a female nominee in the coming week to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, pushing the Republican-controlled Senate to consider the pick without delay.

My guess is that McConnell attempts to hold the confirmation vote the day after the election, or maybe a few days later. I’m not sure what Chuck Schumer can do to drag this out as long as possible, but he should pull out all the stops. If Biden wins, and wins convincingly, I think some Republican senators might get squeamish about ramming someone in during the lame duck session, especially if Biden refuses to close off the possibility of adding more SC justices after he is inaugurated.

There are more moving parts here than I initially thought on Friday night. It’s still likely they’ll get someone in before next year, but not a foregone conclusion.

It is interesting how Republicans are rushing to move on this. It shows they don’t have much confidence in the upcoming election.

Naomi Rao is wingnuttiest, and that dude who is a McConnell ally (Thapar) is really dangerous if I remember correctly.

And subservient to the two males that I have placed on the Court.

It should be in contravention of the 1st Amendment to have the Supreme Court contain a majority of the same religion.

By naming someone so soon, the nuttiness of any Trump pick will be well known. It will be an anchor on Blue and purple state senate GOPers during voting — which is occurring NOW. The hypocrisy of any GOP senators in seeking to ram through a nomination during voting for president — when they opposed a nomination 9 months in advance in 2016 — is a great tool for Democratic candidates. These candidates can literally show clips of their opponents saying the opposite 4 years ago.

This move has the great likelihood of harming a lot of GOP campaigns.

Imagine the epic whining and “not allowed to” rants we’re in for when the nominee doesn’t sail through to shouts of acclaim. This is perfectly designed to allow him to wallow in self pity.

Even if the confirmation vote takes place after the election, as soon as Trump nominates someone—which apparently will be very soon—the media will start intensely scrutinizing everything that person has ever said or written. And there will be some crazy stuff for sure. On balance, I think that benefits Democrats, since she will be replacing the beloved RBG.

You’re right. I think the smarter move (for them) would be to wait until after the election to nominate someone.

By announcing someone now, isn’t Trump making the election a referendum on whether this person gets to be the next SC justice? If Biden wins big, that might cause some Republican senators to lose their nerve during the lame duck period. If just 4 break ranks, then the nomination is sunk.

Trump is in a bind. He pledges and wants for the sake of his election to nominate some one who ‘is popular.’ There is no such person he can nominate. For his base he has to nominate someone who would reverse Roe v. Wade. Trump’s problem is that some 70%of the country want to keep Roe v Wade.

The Compartmentalizer-in-Chief will nominate a woman who’s pledged to end abortion rights and congratulate himself for this master stroke of pandering to women. Of course it will have been Harvard graduate Jared’s idea, who can compartmentalize pretty well himself, to think that women, fundamentalists, and Catholics would all be pleased for different reasons. If you put all the people who bought their way into Harvard in a room I suspect it would be a pretty motley crew.

I hope he nominates Cruz, tbh. I’m sure future President Cruz has zero interest in the position. Also, he wouldn’t be able to cast a vote.
If Trump decides he’s losing, a FU move like this is conceivable.
If it’s a woman, then Joni Ernst works

Speer was a German.

So was Goethe

They are both the same to Trump…the only reason being that someone would have told him.
